Final Page

And that's the end of that!

Whether you've been around since the comic's inception in 2008 or just got here-- thanks for reading!

I have already begun planning my next major comic project, which I hope to launch sometime in 2022. In the meantime, you may find some amusement in my side comic, Virmir-World.

I've submitted the Crimson Flag book to IndyPlanet and am told the review process may take 6-8 weeks, so hopefully it will be available sometime in March or April 2021. It will be available for purchase here, once available.

Until then, starting next week I will be posting a few bonus pages from the book itself, so stay tuned!
Crimson Flag Book Available Soon
posted by Virmir on February 29th, 2020 for Comic 566
Yes indeed-- as Crimson Flag nears its conclusion, over the past few years I've also been putting together a print book to go along with the online comic. This is mainly a personal project since I like the idea of a physical book to go on my shelf, but maybe some other people want a copy too!

Pictures and more info here.

Drawing With Hands
posted by Virmir on November 19th, 2016 for Comic 395
This is the last page (395) I colored and shaded with my mouth. From here on I've been alternating between my right hand for line work and my left hand for everything else.

It's been a strange year.
Regularly scheduled updates
posted by Virmir on December 12th, 2015 for Comic 346
Hello!

Crimson Flag now returns to its regularly scheduled updates every Saturday!

Because I was not happy with the pace that my arms were healing, I have decided to learn to draw with my mouth. Therefore I am now able to output one page per week in addition to other art on the weekends while still resting the arms enough so they are not overworked (that is, two days with the right hand, two days with the left hand, three days with the mouth). This schedule, plus a buffer of 12 pages, should ensure this sort of thing never happens again.

I start using my mouth on upcoming page 350. Page 351 is actually drawn entirely with my mouth and from there I start using my right hand a little more each week until 355 or so where most of the line work is right handed and then I finish all the coloring, shading, effects with my mouth. (Meanwhile, I'm using my left hand to draw other stuff on the weekend.) This is where I'm at now and it's a pretty good schedule that's not bothering any body part significantly and is also allowing me to satiate my deep rooted need to spend every conceivable moment drawing. Hoorray!

12 pages is a pretty crazy huge buffer for a weekly comic, however I'm going to maintain it as long as both my arms are still not up to speed. If they ever do heal 100% (that would put me at something like 300% drawing capacity), then maybe I'll consider burning off some of the buffer with some bonus updates or something.
Updates every other week
posted by Virmir on September 5th, 2015 for Comic 339
Hello!

Fortunately, the period of monthly updates only lasted one month! Crimson Flag will now update every other Saturday until I can build up the buffer large enough and ensure I can maintain my former pace. Hopefully we'll be back to weekly updates soon!

Monthly updates
posted by Virmir on August 1st, 2015 for Comic 338
Hello!

Crimson Flag now begins its slow return over the next several months as my arms recover further. For now, Crimson Flag will update on the first Saturday of every month. The frequency will increase as I slowly build up to my former speed (and construct a large buffer), which will take some time still. Monthly updates are of course painfully slow, but better than no updates at all!

If you would like to follow my status or just read the full story on what in blazes is wrong with my arms, follow the designated forum thread!
Still on break
posted by Virmir on May 23rd, 2015 for Comic 337
NOT BACK YET-- This was an interesting page to work on as it was drawn in a series of something like 75 tiny 5-minute drawing sessions over the course of the past five months (plus a few longer ones towards the end). I do intend to build up a 10 page buffer before returning to regular updates, but I don't see the sense in hanging onto this page for months until then.

The arms do seem to be better than when I posted the previous message back in January, although they are improving at a glacially slow pace. I am currently allowing myself about three hours of drawing per week, which is significantly more than where I was at, although I have quite a ways to go yet before I can invest the 10-14 hours required per CF page. At the very least I am now capable of at least poking at it a little. Lately I've been practicing sketching with fewer, more precise strokes to save wear and tear on my arms.

If you would like to follow my status or just read the full story on what in blazes is wrong with my arms, I post updates in this forum thread (now with statistical data and charts!) Hopefully the next page will be less than four months out!
CF is now on break
posted by Virmir on January 24th, 2015 for Comic 336
Hello!

Unfortunately the arm issues mentioned a while back persist, therefore I've decided to try something I haven't actually tried before-- that is, actually stop drawing for a period longer than a few weeks. I'm not sure how long it will take, but will certainly be at least several months considering I've been struggling with this for seven months so far. I was very much looking forward to bragging about never missing an update a few years down the line after completing Crimson Flag, however this seems the wisest course of action.

If you would like to follow my status or just read the full story on what in blazes is wrong with my arms, I plan on posting updates in this forum thread. Thanks for reading! With luck, hopefully I'll be back in action by the second half of 2015. Then I can just pretend the previous year did not happen!

Guest Artist 1/3
posted by Virmir on November 29th, 2014 for Comic 328
Hello!

As many of you know, I have been struggling with tendinitis in my right arm (my drawing arm) since June of this year. Starting with page 311 I've been drawing significant parts of the comic with my left arm, however due to overuse (especially in July) that arm has been giving me trouble too. Last month I decided to take a three week drawing break and didn't want to dip into the buffer (as I had done previously), and thus commissioned three guest artists to draw some CF pages!

This week's guest artist is Dragyn of Pending Else and Beastling, and who seriously needs to stop not drawing and draw more.

Your regularly scheduled artist will return with page 331 on the December 20 update! (And yes, the break did me good. Working on page 333 right now as I write this. )

Making of a Comic

Changes
posted by Virmir on December 25th, 2010 for Comic 123
Hey folks!

Several pages back, I announced that I was doing a trial run of drawing pages entirely myself-- hence the abrupt style change. (Up until page 117, this was a team effort with Tod Wills providing the pencil sketches that I inked and colored.) I've really enjoyed drawing the comic so far, talked with Tod, and did some serious thinking.

From now on, I will be doing Crimson Flag entirely myself. When I originally enlisted Tod's help, I was not much of an artist at all. I've been practicing every day since then, and this is a challenge I am itching to take on. Obviously this is a major change for the comic, since I draw foxes way more short and cutesy than Tod. This is more towards my original vision of the comic though. Thanks for all your support!

Tod of course is still around! His main comic, Ekwara updates way more frequently than CF. Also, check out his main website and Livejournal.

Thanks for all the help, Tod! I couldn't have gotten this far without you.

Change of Pace
posted by Virmir on November 13th, 2010 for Comic 117
Hey folks!

As most of you probably know, normally I write the comic script, then send that over to Tod of Ekwara fame, who does the base pencil sketches. He sends those to me, and I ink, color, shade, add flashy effects, etc. When I first started this comic over two years ago, I could not draw much at all, so commissioned Tod for his help on the steps I was not confident in (i.e. the base sketches).

Since then, I've been drawing pretty much every single day and feel I'm ready to take on bigger challenges. So just for fun, the next several pages will be drawn entirely by me! My style is a lot shorter and cutsey-er than Tod's, so the transition may be jarring. Sorry.

Moving Servers
posted by Virmir on September 15th, 2009 for Comic 56
Hey folks,

Crimson Flag and its sister sites will be moving to a new server this weekend. The move should be totally transparent to you the visitor apart from a possible short freezing of the chat and forums while data is being copied over. Long story short, we're moving away from a dodgy shared-server provider over to a virtual box. Tons more freedom. Many, many thanks goes out to Tvorsk for helping set this up for me.
Ekwara
posted by Virmir on August 30th, 2009 for Comic 54

Voltar the Magnificent
posted by Virmir on August 29th, 2009 for Comic 54
Most of the credit for Voltar goes to Tod. I'm usually very specific about how the characters look, many of them based off of designs I drew first, then passed along to Tod so he can adapt them to his style. Then every once in a while there will be some throwaway character that will only be in a page or two and I'll just say "draw whatever". So when he came along and drew one of those random guys in page 29 that kicked the tail of anyone I ever designed myself, we both went "wow", had a little brainstorming session, and... well now, he's back for more.
Brief Downtimes
posted by Virmir on July 11th, 2009 for Comic 47
Hey folks,

Some of you may have noticed brief server outages lasting from 30-60 minutes over the past week or so. I've submitted a ticket with my host and am currently looking into the issue, so hopefully we'll get that straightened out soon. In the meantime, if you happen to stop by while the site is down, just give it a half hour or so and try again.

Thanks for reading, everyone!
