Interesting! I just use my phone to read books. Not so good at PDF files and comic pages though. ^.^; It can technically handle them, but it's really slow and it has a small screen.

How does this thing compare to the Kindle?

@Virmir: Yea Its cooler now that I can draw with it! ]:)

@FT: Hmm, I'll be able to properly answer you in about 4 hours (after classes ];) ) But I would think the experience would be different due to the wacom tablet screen, and the lack of that 'whispernet' thingy.

How does this thing compare to the Kindle?

It's kind of not fair for me to compare it to the kindle since it's not available where I live (thus it was never on the list of ereaders to consider)... ]:P

Well anyway the main thing for me is that it currently has the biggest eink screen of any of the ereaders (10.2" screen, vs the Kindle DX's 9.7" screen)  which means it can display A4 pages without needing to pan the PDF document around (so I can read scientific papers and most A4 formatted lecture notes and Labmanuals with no problems).

Also it uses Wacom Penabled technology (same as most of the tablet-pcs on the market thesedays) so you can hand write to annotate onto PDF files (good for lecture notes) which for me is better than the small keyboard thing on the Kindle. It also means I can make random sketches when the mood strikes me.

One thing that is different is that the Current model the 1000s does not have wireless connectivity you need to transfer files Via USB, or you can remove the SD card and use a card reader (the Kindle DX only has max 4gb Internal memory and no SD card Slot same as the Kindle 2 but only 2gb). It doesn't have that Whispernet Cellphone network thingy, but that's no problem for me as I don't plan on buying any ebooks).

I can't compare directly, but the battery lasts around 8/9~10 hours by my estimation, but I haven't really confirmed this yet. The thing is though this is somewhat abysmal compared to other ebook readers (which can last 'days') but in my normal usage it lasts the whole day using about 1/2 of its charge, which includes using the thing during lectures (with the pen, so I assume it uses more power to power the wacom pen than if I were just reading things and just using the buttons)

Anyway that was a lot to write! I hope that helps a bit if you're considering getting an ereader ]:)

TL;DR:
  • Pros: Large eInk screen, Wacom Pen, native PDF support
  • Cons: Expensive ($800 US) (Kindle DX = $400 US), can choke on PDFs full of images and diagrams (but that would be the same for other ereaders too), firmware somewhat buggy for some features, somewhat short battery life for a ebook reader

*kai was kinda tired when writing this... he knows it sounds kinda ramblely and scatterbrained nut he hopes it was useful anyway :)*
