So, uh...from that flashback we saw waaaaay back in the comic that was drawn by Tod, wasn't Lucian kind of...pathetic when it came to fighting those things? And yet there he is taking one out without even opening his eyes. I'm confused.

Agree with Toast. That first flashback was one of his first lessons. This one seems to be later, and thus he can cantrip such a basic spell now.
