Random question on dragons

Random discussion I forget exactly where I saw; someone suggested that dragons can be so magical that they livebirth instead of laying eggs like "common reptiles."  I actually recall this being used in a limited fashion in one story I read, where golden dragons were quite magical and gave livebrith, but all the other dragons came from eggs.

I always considered them to be egg-layers. It's just another layer of different-ness from normal everyday mammals that adds to their mysticism.

Makes for amusing scrambled-egg spells, anyway.

All of the books I've read that had dragons turn up at all had egg-layers.  It seems like the way it would be to me... not that I'm a dragon expert.

The only way I could see dragons having live birth would be if they were like sharks, which I don't think their physiology is built for. Plus, they'd still 'lay' eggs internally.

Granted, if we're talking about the same types of dragons that have boobs, all bets are off. >.>

Like many fantastical creatures, it is in the hands of the writer. Heck, Ive seen a story where they were creatures of sorcery who are born from that which was "blessed" with their blood after a thousand years.

I agree on them being egg layers although, simply to keep with the reptilian theme.

My vote would be eggs, most stories and such I've read depicted them as being able to procreate like any other mundane creature through laying of eggs, though I am not opposed to the other choice/method either.

Honestly, as a dragon I prefer to lay eggs. I have thought of what it would be like to give birth live in comparison and honestly I rather go with eggs. ^^;;

As for other dragons, I generally see them as egg layers. However, I can give exception to dragons who are more mammal then reptile (aka ones that are furred and have more mammalian traits then reptilian but can still be classified as a dragon.

Unless the variety of dragon is particularly mammalian, as Mehl suggested, I would cast a vote for egg-laying.  This method seems more physically reasonable as well, given that even as a hatchling most dragon are depicted as having horns or spikes of some kind.  Horns/spikes in a live-birth scenario could lead to some pretty horrible results, as I am sure many of you might guess.

I'd say egg-laying. Even the more mammalian Eastern Dragons, or some of those exotic fur-dragons.
