It isn't very clear if the hypnosis worked or not, given that the rat's eyes turned back, and Julian's expression doesn't convey one or the other. o.o

Geary: That means you get a companion for four levels, then it gets an upgrade.
Draykin: A very PAINFUL upgrade.

that was only speculation with no means to compare though. And lets be honest, I'd bet money he's had a few upgrades from that staff and/or whoever is attached to it.

I believe the order is intended to be the top 3, followed by the left side of the bottom, then the right side.  It's not the eyes turning back, it's the eyes before hypnosis.
