They freed the dragons which the Monarch had sealed within the portal so long ago.
Ah ok, just looked like some foxes had TFed to dragons
there are some foxy dragons which might be Vir just being Vir, but yeah, the Dragons as shown from the flashback were the original race of the realm before the invasion of the Monarch, and had basicaly been sealed off in the fight, and the elementals with them.
