Good news and more good news:

First, a recent conversation in the Chat has greatly accelerated the development of Freedom Star's defensive technology.  Thanks Lopez!

Second, I saved a bunch of money on-- part 2 of Freedom Star is moving along nicely and should be finished soon.

Attached files: Freedom Star defenses

Also, apologies for the double-post, but I didn't want to attach this to the text wall above.    {:)

Edit: Part 2 is finished!  See attachment below.

The gun is probably almost certainly magic-based, but since Lucian is already going to be boosting Sierra's shield I'm not sure how much help he'll be with the gun.  Then again, he IS a level three mage.  Depending on how much concentration is required he could multitask.

They're both very good.  I also like the lighter background better, but the darker one is still very nice.

Awesome! ... How do wings work when you're a taur?

I would guess they work something like a griffin's wings.  (which means, technically they don't.  At least for flying.)

In general, a ship will only have one type of FTL drive installed due to both size and cost restrictions.  However, a Heavy Cruiser or larger (I'll probably have to get around to size classes now, but in general fighter <<<shuttle <<frigate <light cruiser <destroyer <heavy cruiser <battleship <dreadnought <juggernaut) would have sufficient space to mount two FTL drives, at the expense of whatever would normally occupy that space (usually the hangar).  Subspace drives can be built small enough to fit on a fighter, but their cost and size scales quickly with the size of the ship.  It's actually not possible to add a secondary drive to a Juggernaut if the primary is subspace.

As far as cost goes, Warp drives are the cheapest by far, so most twin-drive ships (which are still ridiculously expensive, but they exist) are Warp/something else.  Subspace drives are in-between, although their cost increases for larger ships.  Hyperspace drives are expensive and take up a the most space, but they don't scale much with ship size and so are suited for larger ships.  Hyperspace drives are actually not used much, because their performance is so similar to warp drives.  The main advantages that hyperspace drives have (besides actually becoming cost-effective for Battleship-class and up) are the ability to avoid collision with Realspace objects and the ability to actually hide in hyperspace without moving.  It's actually possible to hide an entire Star Base in hyperspace, keeping it supplied with hyperspace-capable ships.

Now that I think of it, I'll be adding this to the FTL file under the heading "Which FTL is right for you?"

P.S. If you're wondering how those pirate fighters showed up in the story, they don't have FTL drives at all.  The pirates took advantage of the warp bubble generated by their LC.

tl;dr: One drive per ship, the file will be updated soon to list details and exceptions.

... It'd be kind weird to have a game go from "This next turn might kill us" to "This next turn might give me weird ears".

If I remember right, Jumanji was about as likely to do both, often at the same time.  It would inflict just about anything from mildly uncomfortable to outright fatal.  The only thing predictable about it was that it would nearly always be something bad.  That... actually does sound like it would make a good story.  Murphy's card game or something.

Three words: Act.  On.  Instinct.

Beethoven's 9th is pretty awesome too pure win. (warning: the second one is LONG.  It also has a part 1, but the ending is the best part.)

Thanks, it'll probably be a while before part 2 is up, where we'll be seeing a bit of combat.  I'll be aiming to make part 2 heavy on description and light on dialog.  I've just finished copying the first section of background material, for people curious about the world the story is set in.
Here's a quick explanation of how FTL (Faster Than Light) travel works in the Freedom Star universe, as well as a copy of the previous story in .rtf format, for anyone who doesn't use Open Office.

Edit: the FTL file has been updated regarding the installation of multiple FTL drives, and a quick list of the pros and cons of each drive type.

I've been kicking around a story idea for awhile, and finally got around to making something with it.  It's a fairly short story, but I'm hoping to make something more out of the universe it's set in.  What I'm aiming for is a combination of Freespace 2, Command & Conquer, and just about all the Star (noun) universes.  I've got quite a bit of background material on paper, and I plan on putting it up here as I get it into the computer.  For now, here's what I've got so far.

P.S. I normally write in third-person, but decided to try something new with this.

Update: For people who don't want to hunt through the posts for individual world building articles, the Freedom Star Database is now here.

For people new to the series, Chapter 1 is attached below.

Crimson Flag Comic / Speculations about the world of Crimson Flag
« on: January 31, 2010, 06:30:54 PM »
This is a thread for discussing the world that Crimson Flag is set in.  Feel free to speculate about culture, history, technology, magic, or whatever else comes to mind.  As the title says it's all speculation, so nothing here is canon unless Virmir says it is.  To discuss the plot, see here.  To see a quick explanation of how magic works, see here.  Also, due to the nature of the thread, expect walls of text.

To start things off, it is noted on page 11 that Caerreyn, which I assume by the description is their largest city, has an "unimaginable" population of 700.  However, their technological and magical development (such as airships, anti-airship cannons) is thousands of years ahead of their apparent population density.  The fact that there are powerful magical artifacts (at least, powerful enough to be "of interest" to Caerreyn) indicates that there were precursors, which would accelerate research.  However, that alone is not enough to account for the discrepancy.
The simplest answer could be that there actually are lots of Reyn, but they are scattered across a large area and don't like cities, so it is rare to find so many of them in one place.  Another possibility is that the precursors were not Reyn, and the Reyn only achieved sentience ("conquered nature") after the precursors had left/were annihilated, or the Reyn were once more numerous but something (a plague, class 0-2 apocalypse, or Great War) decimated their population.  They could have also gotten a boost from divine intervention (the Lady of the Stars?) that allowed them to develop rapidly.  Most likely it would be a combination of several factors.

What do you guys think?

Interesting user icon you've got there.

Thanks, I based it on the recon class from Battlefield 2142.  The ears turned out a little small though.

As for the other stuff, do you think it would go well here: http://crimsonflagcomic.com/forum/index.php?topic=38.0
or should I make a new thread?  I am speculating about the past more than the future at the moment...

Crimson Flag Comic / Re: Comic 076

What caught my attention is his use of the word "It" instead of "They".  Depending on the gun's accuracy, stopping power, and rate of fire, having only one gun could put him at a severe disadvantage.  Of course,  an anti-wyvern cannon probably is both powerful and accurate, considering what it's designed to kill, but I'm guessing that A: wyverns tend to attack alone rather than in groups and B: piracy is not much of a problem.  Therefore, the gun probably has a low rate of fire.  Although, based on Lucian's description of the Death Evan's tactics it seems that airships are not expected to have to engage more than one target at a time.

...Or I could be completely wrong and it ends up being some kind of gatling gun.

Hello everybody, another new reader here.  I really like the comic, although some questions arise concerning the Reyn's apparent population density relative to their apparent technological/magical development, that's a potential discussion for a different topic.  Keep up the good work!

Also, I'm using these smileys in my e-mail from now on.  They're just that cool.  {;)
