I've been wrong a ton in this series because of how much it twists and turns, but I'm pretty damn sure that's the mana from what was a powerful kitsune. Mana so powerful it maintained consciousness. Deception and illusion are the stock and trade of the kitsune and that's exactly the weapon the Puppetmancer is using against them.

You know, now that you mentioned this, the thought came across my mind that this tree being "deadly to touch" sounds an awful lot like the mythology surrounding the stone prison of Tamamo-no-Mae and how touching that meant death.

Like when it comes down to slavery, they clearly are not chattel slaves.

Prince Shock Jock disparagingly refers to them as "chickens", and had zero problem turning one into ash with his lightning for the crime of saying something Shock Jock disapproved of.  Indentured Servants still have rights, and are not property -- just legally obliged for a period of time.  Slaves have no rights, they're property, and laws rarely protect them from abuse or worse.  Let us hope Prince Shock Jock, if he survives the fight with rat-tails, comes back much worse for wear.

Huh, I think this is one of the first times that his fooling around has come back to only impact himself... I actually feel a little bad for the poor Kit-ghost.

I'm sure he'll find a way to put the others in unnecessary peril.

I'm reasonably sure he did.  He certainly got what he deserved, but I don't think this plot ends with his simple death.

I kind of suspect that the fire will have burnt off the "skin" of whatever's hiding underneath.  Not expecting that to be pretty.

Good thing his spirit inhabiting that balloon makes it tougher, as we saw how those same claws easily popped balloons earlier.  I was wondering if he was going to have to worry about getting popped all the time.
