Title: Epic Tales of Clashing Empires - Sign Ups, Chapter 1
Post by: Jenia on August 30, 2010, 12:56:07 PM
Having finally acquired proof of interest, I am proud to present the sign ups.
RP will commence on September 22nd in the year 2010.
I'd prefer all characters ready by then!
If you want more background info than presented here (which is only the basics) or a special position for your character (such as leaders), PM me.
Please read the thread thoroughly before putting down your character!

The RP's rules are based on THESE RULES (http://dalpedia.mysticsoftware.net/index.php?title=Rules) that Virmir wrote.

The Rules:
Quote
== Theme ==

A fantasy medieval type deal. Magic is encouraged. Technology should be low (but a few weird inventions are okay). Guns are permitted if you really want them, but they shouldn't be too effective.

There are two types of people in the RP: characters and NPCs.

=== Characters ===

You can now have any number of active characters, just don't go overboard. These are your characters and your characters alone. No one can control them but you.  Guidelines for creating your characters are at the end of this rule set.

=== NPCs ===

NPCs are more flexible. Often you’ll see some soldiers, villagers, monsters, or other non important characters. Generally, anyone can create and use these characters. But if someone is using a NPC in a character like fashion, it’s probably best not to control it for them.
Occasionally an important character will be marked for shared use (such as a leader of a group of NPCs). These NPCs, while they can be used by anyone, should only be controlled sparingly.

==== NPC Groups ====

Large bands of NPCs with similar interests are "Groups".  Some examples include the villagers of a particular town or the soldiers of an army.

Groups can be controlled en mass much like a single NPC, however much more description is expected.

Groups are SLOW.  The larger the group, the slower it is.  For example, a large advancing army will take several posts to arrive at its target destination.  If the said army is attacking a village, the villagers will be SLOW to organize and react, unless it is made clear that they have been preparing for the attack beforehand.  If another army is called in to defend the village, it will take a while to arrive, etc.

Groups will remain in context.  Soldiers will very readily fight in an organized manner.  Villagers will not because it is not what they specialize in.  Merchants will always be interested in money and profit, etc.

Group sizes should remain reasonable.  An army in the tens of thousands is very large.  A hundred thousand is unfathomably huge, and would require very many posts to set up.  A million will likely get you a polite request to edit your post. Remember that this is a medieval world we're talking about, so it's not very densely populated.
As a rule of thumb, it's best to run any intention to use a group of more than a few thousand by me before using it.

=== Actions ===

Each character is limited to three "actions" per post.  An action is something your character does. Some examples:

* Attacking another character
* Defending an attack
* Charging/preparing an attack (i.e. for bigger than normal spells)
* Starting to walk/run/fly from one place to another
* Arriving on the scene
* Picking up an item

... etc. Basically use your own judgment. Conversation with other characters doesn't count (so you can talk as much as you want).  This is a maximum and not a required value.  Remember to keep the fluidity of the story above all else.

Note that both starting to travel to one location and arriving at a location are each considered one action, but it is a bad practice to have your character leave one area and arrive in another in the same post.  See the 'travel' section below.

=== Charging Techniques ===

An action is "charged" if it requires more than one "set up" posts to execute. Each of these posts require a description of the action charging or being set up. If a post does not contain description of the action being charged, then it does not count as charging that specific action. Furthermore, the length of (real world) time passed and the number of posts by other players in between the beginning and execution of an action have no effect on how much the action has been charged.

Basically,  if a character "charges" an attack, honor that attack as more powerful than normal.  This is furthered generalized by the following.

=== Rule of Proportional Effects / Proportional Posts ===

This is more of a guideline than a steadfast rule.  Think about what your character is doing and how many people (other characters and NPCs) his/her action is going to affect (cause them to take an action, or make them do something completely different than what they currently are, etc.).  The number of posts describing your character taking that action should be proportional to the number of people that are being affected by it.

In other words, a simple fireball attack might affect 1-3 people-- just one post for that.  Some sort of shockwave might blow apart a large section of a town-- better take two or three posts, the first an elaborate description describing your character preparing the spell, the last for the character executing it.  Need to rescue your friend from 30 armed NPCs?  There's no way that can be done in one post.  Probably should go for three or more.  What your character actually does during those posts doesn't matter.  He could fight through all the guards, sneak around them, prepare some elaborate plan, etc.  Some sort of event that involves an entire city, say, should be detailed through probably ten or more.  Some event that involves the entire planet?  Probably an entire chapter.

=== Story events and nature of actions ===

As far as the story goes, anything can happen as long as it's in good taste and doesn't disrupt the flow of the RP or its medieval setting. The only restriction is that you don't control other players' characters. i.e. If you throw a fireball at someone, you let them decide whether they get hit by it or not.

=== Travel ===

Try and be realistic in the amount of time it takes to get to one place from another. You should never leave one area and arrive in the next in the same post. Places that are farther away should take more posts to get to. I'm not going to spell out the distances between each place we've been to so far, so use your own judgment.

Be descriptive! Especially when you're entering a place of your own design. Try and build off of other posters' descriptions as well. This is important, as it’s easier to tell what’s going on if you know where you’re at.

=== Posting ===

There is a limit of three ’updates’ per day.  An update is a post that contains any actions for any of your characters.  The only exception is a post that contains only dialogue,  i.e. if your character is just talking to another character.

On the other hand, try and stop in to update at least once a day!

==== No one-liners ====

No lame one line "Character A followed Character B" posts. Let us know what they're thinking, what scenery they're looking at, etc.

==== Three day rule ====

If you are fighting someone and your opponent doesn't post for three days, assume they were hit by your attack and knocked unconscious.

==== Location  ====

Most posts should have the location name at the top of each group of characters you are updating like this:

 ''- Location name A -''

 Update for character A here.

 ----

 ''- Location name B -''

 Update for character B here.

When you'd like to keep the location secret, use '? ? ?' or the equivalent.
This helps keep track of where everyone is at.

==== Comments ====

Comments not part of the flow of the RP should be made obvious by placing them in between parentheses or slashes, etc.  Try and keep commenting to a minimum.  Major questions should be asked in the current chapter's signup topic, rather than in the middle of the RP.

Try and refrain from quoting other posts unless absolutely necessary, since they just look bad and disrupt the flow of the RP.

Comment-only posts are discouraged.  If you want to discuss something, post in the signup topic.

=== Limitations ===

No unbounded instant teleportation.  If they have the ability, characters can only teleport for short distances, and even that should be used sparingly.  No instant transmission from one place to a totally different one.  And traveling at the speed of light is the same thing... so don't!

No character is allowed an off-the-wall "sensing" ability. Nobody has tracking devices on their person, magical or otherwise - unless you explicitly place one on their person during the course of the RP. Limited sensing is allowed, such as sensing general things like life within a few dozen feet and sensing a specific person within a few feet.

=== Story Integrity Guidelines ===

The following amendments are added to keep the basic story and RP world on track, and to prevent things from getting out of hand.

==== Dimensions ====

A "dimension" is defined as any place that cannot be reached through normal means of travel (e.g. walking, flying, etc.).

Characters cannot "control" dimensions.  Dimensions cannot be destroyed, time flow cannot be changed,  the fate of a dimension cannot be linked with character's life, etc.

This RP does not operate on the "infinite number of possible dimensions" idea, where there's a multitude of dimensions in which random key events occurred differently in their individual time lines, so each world is slightly different from the others, but have mostly the same people in them. There can be multiple dimensions, but each one is unique.

The "real world" is not a dimension any character or NPC can access or reference. If it is referenced via the Fated (read below), the character is magically incapable of sharing or discussing this information with anyone other than their Fated.

==== Dimensional Travel  ====

Each player may have his/her characters cross into another dimension only once per chapter.  There can only be one crossing, and the number of characters involved does not matter.  Once the crossing occurs, none of that player's characters can change dimensions until the next chapter, even if they didn't take part in the crossing.  (Exceptions can be set up if need be.)

=== Reading ===

It is important to read every post of the RP since your last post. In order to create a coherent world, we all need to know what is going on  with everyone else, even if what other characters are doing on the other side of the world do not immediately affect your own.

If you get totally lost, just ask in the sign up topic and one of us will be happy to give you a short summary of what's going on.

Though the rules are long, they will probably not be as long as the collective posts the RP receives on a good day.
Chances are if you've just skimmed though the above rules and  jumped to this line you are not cut out for this RP.

== Character Signup ==

=== Specializations ===

Characters only are allowed to have a specialization in a few areas, which will be described in the character's biography.  Specializations can be very specific (e.g. "Fire Magic", "Sword Techniques"), or more broad (e.g. "Destructive Magic", "Bladed Weapons").  The broader the specialization, the less effective the character's talents should be in that area, but on the other hand, the character will have a wider variety of skills.  Think of this as sort of a "class".

This is to prevent characters from suddenly using uncharacteristic abilities out of nowhere.  This does not mean that characters cannot have hidden abilities, just that those abilities need to be added to the character's specialization once they come out.  Try not to make the list of specializations too long or unreasonable, though.

=== Bio ===

Post your character signup right in this topic.  I will look it over and then give you the okay if it's fine. Though to be honest, I doubt there's anyone here I won't okay.

Include the following information in your signup post:

Race: Can be pretty much anything, canon to the background or not.
Specialization(s): Same
Age: Try to avoid 'ageless' characters.
Occupation:
Weapon(s): Plus a description, if necessary

=== Geography ===

The world in which this RP takes place is called Memad, of which the known portion is the shape of a quasisphere beyond which is a seemingly infinite waterfall and mist. On it, there are two main continents, called Wyvernon and Sicklen, which are joined by a small land bridge. A pair of large islands are also known, and there are many unexplored small islands.

=== Common Native Races ===

Note that you can play any race you wish, and these are only here to provide general guidelines to how the world works. Feel free to create your own race. It will either be a minority in the known world or from elsewhere. Like I said, up to you...
Each race may have subraces, which are usually only different from other subraces by their colors.

-Anthros-
The anthros are a specie native to Sicklen of mammalian humanoids.  They have typical humanoid features, plus fur, long pointy ears, and a tail. The three most widely known subraces of anthros are:
  • Lisks
Lisks are fox-like anthros, in appearance, usually living together in small, tightly-knit communities. They are stereotypically branded as compliant farmers.
  • Rukos
Rukos are raccoon-like anthros in appearance. They are stereotypically branded as savages and bandits, except by the holiim, who view them as very very very distant cousins, mostly due to the nomadic habits thing. Unlike many other sentient races, most live a nomadic lifestyle.
  • Grarim
The grarim(plural, singular is grari) are different from other subraces in that they make look like any mammalian race in the area, or a hybrid of two. Additionally, the grarim differ from others in that they are a pheromone based society. The pheromone encourages loyalty to a grari queen, of which there typically is only one (when another one becomes queen, the old one naturally ceases to be one).

-Zohal-
The zohal are a race of reptillian humanoids native to Wyvernon, with two arms and two legs, each with three clawed digits, a bald head, holes instead of nose and ears, as well as a tail. Sometimes they have patterns on their scales. The three most common subraces of zohal are:
  • Greenscale
Greenscales, like their namesake, are green-scaled zohal, usually with yellow eyes.  Most of them live in forests, and their culture revolves around nature and her bounty. They are stereotyped as tree-huggers by others.
  • Dirtscale
Dirtscale scale colors range from dirt brown to pale yellow, and their eyes are usually teal. Most of them live in a large walled island, where their xenophobic elders spend their time tutoring their young.
They are stereotyped as being "the wise hermits" by other cultures.
  • Blendscale
Blendscales are unique in that they have a chameleon like ability, and are able to assume any scale color, either blending into their surroundings or passing for members of another zohal subrace. Their 'default' color is bluish-white, and their eyes are usually red. They used to have a vast empire until recently, but it was dissolved due to internal conflict. Many of them are mercenaries, while others live among another zohal subrace, hiding their identity. Others stereotype them as greedy ninjas.

-Farmen-
Basically, "far-men", named so because they aren't native to the known world. Said to have fled from their homeland during some sort of horrible cataclysm, these beings look pretty much like humans. The only known subraces of farmen are:
  • Holiim
The holiim are olive skinned, dark haired and dark eyed farmen. Most of them prefer a nomadic lifestyle, usually as merchants or sailors. They are stereotyped as hardy survivors or devilish merchants, depending on who told you about them...
  • Shiltons
The shiltons are ivory skinned farmen with brightly colored hair and eyes of any color, up to and including unnatural ones. It is said that back in their home they have a large proud empire - whether this story is true or not can no longer be confirmed, however their culture certainly encourages pride in who they are and an outlook of inferiority towards other subraces and races, except the Djuni. Shiltons are highly talented, and any member of the subrace is roughly five times as likely to boast extraordinary talent of some sort. Stereotyped as being a bunch of snotty bullies.
  • Djuni
The Djuni are said to have once been the ruling class of the Shiltons. They always stand out among shiltons because they have the unique combination of fiery red colored hair and bright golden eyes. Unknown to most, the Djuni have but a speck of draconic blood in their veins. With the proper magic, this speck can be made into power, allowing the djuni to shapeshift into red dragon form either partially or fully, as well as use the dreaded hellfire. Fortunately for most, the Djuni are very rare.

=== Background ===
For years the Blendscale empire of Frostarn and the Grarim empire of Stranagrar ruled and shared most of the known world as allies, failing only to conquer the fortified Dirtscale refuge of Dirt Island due to it's heavy fortification and the distant mysterious isle of Masecha due to it's remoteness. A few years ago civil war broke out in Frostarn, as even the blendscales were no longer happy with their emperor. This gave the slave races incentive to rebel, and eventually the Frostarn empire dissolved. Unlike the ruthless Frostarnian rule, Stranagrar kept their slaves in velvet shackles, but news of their neighbors rebelling and winning has given them incentive to try and overcome their masters like their distant brethren did...

=== Theology ===
There are many beliefs in the world, but few can dispute that beings called Loudras made the world long ago and vanished soon after, due to a large amount of temple and shrine ruins left pretty much everywhere. Oddly enough, while all cultures called them "loudras", each depicted them as looking differently, so nobody is sure what they looked like. Either way, few see a point in worshiping beings that no longer attend to their reality, so people have turned to others for prayer:
Druidism: Worship of Memad as a conscious entity, similar to "mother nature". Druidists try their best to live in harmony with nature.
Angelism: The worship of angels, often incited by encounter with a particular one or hearing about a particular one from a friend, usually involves prayer to that angel for blessing or assistance with whatever the individual is trying to accomplish, in return trying to please the angel by staying virtuous.
The Fated: The belief that somewhere out there, somewhere, are mysterious beings that influence or control the fate of mortals. The Fated's desires are up for interpretation as there are no clear doctrines anywhere, making this a very popular faith.
In truth, the fated are us - the players. By controlling the actions of our characters, we control the fate of the world, no?
Neo-atheism ("there are no gods anymore") is also prevalent.

How Magic Works:
(Note that those are not rules, merely guidelines)
Quote
Innate: Innate magic comes from one's flesh and blood, and is usually of any one theme. Fairies would probably have ability to cast illusions, angels would probably have evil banishing, healing, and light creating abilities, etc. Normally, using innate magic tires the body. Normal people wouldn't be able to use this, unless they get a transfusion or something from a magical creature...
Psionic: Psionic magic comes from one's mind, and requires great will to use. Psionic abilities range from telepathy, telekinesis, thermokinesis (the ability to increase or decrease temperature at any point of concentration) and the vague "planokinesis" - a technique in which one twists the fabric of space to create the tiniest of holes to other places in the multiverse, which can either do nothing (as solid objects can't pass through these holes), create tiny amounts of some liquid (water, acid...) or sudden expansions of gas, or even whirlwinds if the hole leads to vacuum.
Soul:Soul magic comes from one's spirit, often fueled by one's ability to feel emotions, empathy and sympathy. Soul mages can communicate with spirits, animate objects by binding spirits to them, lay curses and blessings, and read into people by observing their aura. Some souls also have an affinity for one thing or another, and allow the mage to create various effects depending on the affinity by ripping out a part of their soul and materializing it.
Ritual: Ritual magic is the only magic that doesn't require the user to have any power whatsoever. It has many forms, each following a different set of rules, be it incantations, runes, bizarre dancing, or any combination of the three, ritual magic tends to be much slower than other magics to accomplish something, but at the same time, much more versatile, and can in theory accomplish virtually anything, with enough effort and time. Users of ritual magic need only have access to the rules of whatever rule set they are using at the time, be it from memory or a book kept at arm's reach.

Tips for those planning to play their part as fated:
Quote
- You do not have to do this. Feel free to just directly control your character's actions, as you would in other RP.
- Should you wish it, you may speak to your character's mind or dreams. Their reaction is up to you.
- You may not speak to another's character.
- You may control but not speak to NPCs.
- Introducing characters to real world concepts is frowned upon. If you do, however, note the rule "the character is magically incapable of sharing or discussing this information with anyone other than their Fated".
- Revealing information to a character it wouldn't otherwise have is also frowned upon.
- Use your best judgment.

Oh, and here's my character:

Name: Kigar Esshora
Gender: Male
Race: Djuni
Specialization(s): Psionics - especially telekinesis
Age: 28
Occupation: Traveler
Weapon(s): Kigar a dozen simple, iron shortswords, as mundane as can be.
Alliance: Loyalist Shiltons, Djuni, and the rebels.
Description: Kigar stands 1.9 meters tall with a slightly muscular build. He has the classic Djuni crimson hair reaching halfway down his back, all of it brushed back and seemingly well taken care of. His eyes are also piercing golden, as one would expect, however, the normally white area of his eyes is black. His skin is a light reddish-brown.  He normally wears a full suit of heavy-looking golden-trimmed gray armor (which is obviously worn from age and use), but he tends to forgo the helm. He keeps two swords at each side of his thigh, four on his upper back, their handles showing over his shoulders, and four more on his lower back, worn horizontally as keep interference with movement minimum. He also has a dark maroon cape adorning his back, though it's old, somewhat torn and of waning color.
Bio: Kigar was born to a pair of Djuni in a small slave-village of shiltons in northern sicklen, under grarim rule. With the help of a traveling holiim, he was smuggled at the age of 6 all the way to a safe haven in Wyvernon, after the fall of Frostarn, to the village of Yuean. His father left instructions for his foster parents, clearly intending for Kigar to master his inner dragon and become a blood mage. Kigar didn't have the talent for it, but went as far as ritually boosting the dragon content of his blood, which resulted in his unsettling blacks for whites in his eyes and the unusual tinge to his skin. However, he did exhibit extraordinary talent with psionics, and deep interest in the history of his people. At the age of 24, he left the village for Sicklen.

MMm, SOunds interesting! Tell us more about the setting and general Plot ];)

" Chances are if you’ve just skimmed though the above rules and jumped to this line you are not cut out for this RP." ]:P Lol its a lot of rules though.. I remember Virmir saying he just tacked a new rule on when someone did something wrong.

Perhaps you can make a concise Version for us at least, since I believe were a different forum people would behave differently, so the rules would be different If anything most of us here wouldn't be trying to Godmode everything, so some of these rules are redundant and just result in TL;DR.

Edit: if theres were guidelines rather than 'rules' I guess it works, it just seems over draconian, atm

Will tell it all in a thread I'll make soon.

As for the rules, of course I'll make a slightly different version. I mean, I did say "based on" I didn't say "copied off from"... Apologies if I weren't clear..

Here's my character, it's not final though, so feedback is appreciated and the info is subject to change.  I understand that my musket will probably be outclassed by longbows as a ranged weapon in this setting, but meh, ye olde boomstick is more fun.  {;)

Name: Simon Renault
Gender: Male
Race: Lisk
Specialization(s): Firearms, machinery, metalworking
Age: 26
Occupation: Blacksmith

Weapon(s): Smoothbore flintlock musket, bayonet.  The musket is a simple, common peice in the woodlands, used for hunting and fending off varmints of both the thinking and wild variety.  His is fairly well-made, powerful and somewhat accurate, but takes a while to reload.  In close quarters he can bash opponents with the sturdy wooden stock, or fix the bayonet to convert it into a handy spear.

Alliance: His family, and village

Description: At a mere 5'6" and 135 lbs, Simon is not everyone's typical idea of a blacksmith. His bright orange-red fur is almost always dimmed with soot, which also makes the white on his lower face, torso, and tail tip appear to be more of a dirty gray.  His paws and ears are naturally black, however.  He is strong for his size, and at the same time below average in strength, for his occupation anyway.  He has bright blue eyes that seem to shine out from the often dirty fur on his face.  He wears a gray shirt that was probably white at one point, leather coveralls, and sturdy leather boots.  He typically has a laid back, cheerful disposition, prone to making the occaisional wisecrack.

Bio: Simon is a blacksmith, like his father, his father's father, his father's father's father, and well, you get the idea. While he has already completed his apprenticeship, his father is still in charge of the smithy.  His village is in the southern woodlands, far from the capital city, and typically several weeks behind on current events, if news reaches them at all.  After years of preparation, Simon is now traveling to the capital to apply to the Blacksmith's Guild for his journeyman's license, unaware of the chaos that has befallen the north.

Name: Ril'Trag Kin'Rog
Gender: Presumably Male
Race: Korg
Specialization: Crossbows and Claws
Age: Undefined
Occupation: Merchant/Mercenary
Weapons: A teak crossbow with iron pyrite decorations, made for high functionality and a captivating appearance, and his own claws, razor sharp but very rarely helpful against humanoids at Ril'Trag's size.
Alliance: No Remaining Allegiance
Description: A member of an insectoid race, resembling deep blue, wingless wasps in appearance with no major differences in each other other than size. Ril'Trag stands approximately 3'6", assuming one excludes his antennae, and has a large scar on his chest, which shows through his exoskeleton via a purple mark. He is unhindered except for a belt holding his crossbow and several dozen bolts and a large backpack used to carry goods.
Bio: Ril'Trag was the average Korg, obedient, hard-working, and rather mindless in regards to anything other than his daily routine, that is until he stumbled across a small crossbow. The foreign device caused a spark in his mind that caused him to quickly break from the swarm and start researching and practicing with the device in secret. When he felt himself proficient with it, he showed it to the queen and demonstrated his skills with it. He later woke up that day outside the hive burrow* with a gash on his chest and his crossbow broken in half. That was when he decided that there was nothing left for him there, and left the the burrow and Dirt Island and hitched a ride on a ferry transporting refugees out of Frostarn. Ril'Trag now attempts to use his abilities elsewhere, traveling, selling, and every now and then slaying for funds for his obsession. His work paid off recently, and netted him a crossbow fit for the Royal Guard, though he still searches for the perfect crossbow, and even dreams of owning a balista some day.

Okay, I have two characters that I am labling as the Tyl Twins, Altais and Eltanin. They are a by-product of an old government project called the "Thuban Effort" which was an attempt by the blendscale to one up the other empire by imitating the Shilton/Djuni relationship. The experiment was considered a failure when Al and El were produced and seemed to all purposes to be completely ordinary save in appearance. They shared the traits of most blendscales, but were also born with wings and claws (which were retractable for some reason) and were overall more draconian than other blendscales. However aside from these visible traits, the twins seemed completely ordinary and the government quickly divested itself of its mistake by selling the twins into slavery and discontinuing the entire idea. One or two people hung onto the thought, but for the most part it was forgotten.

Years pass, the twins grow up and when they hit puberty their innate magic manifests which they use to escape slavery shortly before the empire fell. Now the two wander the lands as travellers, not quite sure how to handle freedom just yet, but very determined to keep it. I don't have time just now, but I'll go into the individual profiles when I have the chance.

Name: Vandme Scarsdale
Gender: Male
Race: Dekemba Greenscale
Specialization(s): Agriculture, Nature Soul Casting
Age: 25
Occupation: Nature Sage, a Soul Based Spell Caster trained both in using their magics to protect their tribe in times of conflict, and help better a tribes crops in times of peace.
Weapon(s): Seedborn Scythe. A staple of Nature Sages, the Seedborn Scythe is a short curve blade with a thick wooden hilt. Why it is a staple of the sages however is the small seed that is embredded within the hilt. When a small shard of soul is applied to the seed, it grows into a small controllable vine, which sages use when something more than a weapon is needed.
Alliance: Kendema, a Greenscale Tribe of the Dekemba Forests.
Description: Vandme is a tall and stocky greenscale with hazel colored eyes and a strong grin. Much like his bretheren of Dekembe, he is very much iguanadonian in appearance, with large spikes flowing down the center of his spine, and large curved claws on his fingers and toes.
Bio: The Dekambe Forests are one of the largest Foreseted Expanses of the Brownscale contininent. Due to its vast size, and difficult terrain, it is an area that for much of its life has been untouched by Brownscale civilization.

It is this division, and a feeling of Xenophobia among themselves that has left the Dekembe Greenscale nations live mostly unknown by the outside world. Mostly comprised of small villages lead by elders, the nations have for the most part kept to themselves, seeing no need to interact with the outside world.

This all changed however when War came to the continent, as a battle on the edge of the forest ignited a large fire that threatened to engulf the forest itself. The sages from all the villages to despatch with it, and were able to, but not without cost. The village of Kenmenar was completly destroyed, as was a large patch of forest and ariable land that other villages use for crops.

The "Great Fire" as it was to be called created divisions and controversy among the nations. Fear about the unknown outside world caused for the tribe to be come more Xenophobic to some, and more concerned about being such to others. It was this latter group that decided it was time to learn more, and did so by sending out sages. Vandme is of these such Sages, who finds himself leaving a world he knew well, and entering a world he knows little...

hmm, this seems interesting and I'd like to make a character. Ideally it would be a mage that leans towards illusion but I'm not sure how that fits in under your magic categories.

There is alot of Wiggleroom Jonas, and being that what is described is mostly the "how" and not the what, I could see Illusions being cast using any of the 4 magics, although the result being different(ie, Psiconic Illusions being like a Desert Mirage)

What Kenku said, Jonas.  These sources of magics are designed to be very "open ended". By moving from category to category, illusion wise, you merely move from "mirage" to "optical illusion" to "hallucination" to even "magical 3D animation". Interpretation really is up to the player beyond what I already wrote down.

By the way, you are all approved so far.

Right, I actually have the time to go into the individual characters.

Name: Altais Tyl
Gender: Male
Race: 'Uplifted' Blendscale (I don't know what to call it... blendscale/djuni looking thing?)
Specializations: Chaos magic, Physical Enhancement, imitation, and psycology.

What the hell that means: Al is an innate mage of the element chaos. This does not mean he casts chaos type spells, but rather that his spells are related to chaos. Basically the details of his magic differ from day to day. One day he might operate by influencing chance and fate around him to get what he wants, and interesting/unlikely events are more likely to occur (aka, improbability drive mode).

Another option is direct application of chaos, causing ordered things to lose order, but ignoring things which are already chaotic. This means a cauldron lid would not help you at all, but a shield with suit of armor would help protect you quite a bit though you'd end up with severely warped equipment afterwards. Metal rusts and wood starts to grow once more, while humans might suddenly suffer stroke, break a bone, or suddenly develop straight teeth. The longer you are effected, the longer something permanent and/or bad is likely to happen to you. This is what I refer to as raw chaos mode.

On the other side of the coin, 'refined' chaos mode is where he wields chaos more like a scalpel than a sledgehammer. It's not quite so powerful, but he can control where it goes, causing a wooden door to warp out of the way rather than abruptly put out branches and root itself into the ground.

Next, random mode, is when he literally has no control over his spells. For those of you familiar with TotQ, think Wildcard. Once the spell starts, he knows what it does, the limits, and can control it, but before that he has little to no input. The limit of what he can do is determine the purpose of his spell, such as attack, heal, summon, etc.

There may be other variations, but in the interest of not going on forever, I'll move on to Physical Enhancements. In some ironic and confusing twist of nature, Al actually has pretty good control over his magic when it's applied to himself or people he knows well (pretty much just his brother really). This may seem like he himself is ordered and causes chaos around him, but that is actually very wrong. He is not the eye of the storm, but rather the storm is most intense around him. Al is a master of riding out chaotic situations and acts best when there are a lot of random factors and events flying around. This plus a sort of 'familiar grounds' phenomenon causes him to have very good control of magic applied to himself. Like a really good surfer, it's easier to surf properly on a big wave than on still water. Also like such a surfer, screwups are rare, but rather spectacular.

The last thing mentioned was imitation/psychology, which means that he knows how to get into someone's head and mimick them and their spells for a short amount of time. I'm not sure if this counts as a specialization, but it's a nifty skill I thought worth mentioning. There may be other specializations that I didn't think to list here... if so I'll edit this later.

The rest of the points such as appearance, history, etc I already explained and is the same for both twins. Due to Al's control over himself, appearance is not actually set, but you can go off what I said earlier for their 'natural' forms. Generally due to prejudices against 'freaks', the twins find it easier to pretend to be blendscales for the most part, hiding all signs to the contrary by various means when traveling in populated areas.

Age: 20
Weapon of choice: Martial arts. Due to the chaotic nature of his magic, Al quickly realized is wasn't wise to rely too heavily on it in case things went wrong, so developed something that didn't have to be carried around and was very versatile. This plus his enhancement magic makes him a formidable foe, especially against multiple enemies and in chaotic situations where he is right at home in his element.

He will also occasionally fight with an actual weapon just for kicks or because the situation calls for it, but doesn't carry them around so has to summon a new one every he needs it. This sometimes leads to awkward situations where he's facing a knight in armor with dinner cutlery. He can use his personally applied magic to give himself temporary proficiency with what he's stuck with.

Interesting facts: I'm taking a quantum angle on chaos, meaning when you look at him casting a spell, it will look different every time you look. In generally, his magic will get the job done, it just does so in rather questionable paths.

I'll get to Eltanin (El) on another day when I've time... :/

Heres mine! Feel free to change if need!

Name:  Joshua Dalca

Gender:  Male

Race: Djuni

Specialization(s):Pistols, Fire Arms, Short Swords, Long Swords, Shields,
Medium Armor

Age: 19.

Occupation:  Freelance

Weapon(s):  2 Double Barreled Flintlock pistols. Standard Falchion.

Alliance:  Simon Renault

Description:  Like all the Djuni, he has shoulder length Scarlet Hair and Piercing Golden eyes. He is 6 feet and 3 inches tall.

Bio:  He used to live in a Djuni Village in south-east Wyvernon called Yuean. The Village itself encourages trade with the outside word and has adopted the use of guns. He never really liked the place. Incidentally, he never actually learned how to control the small percent of dragon blood that pumps in his veins. However he did learn how to use Firearms.  So the second he fully learned how to survive on his own, he left the village with the two pistols his father gave him. All he ever wanted to do was travel and see the entire world with his own eyes. What better way to do that then by walking. Ok. He hates that part too. So he works as a free lancer. Doing anything to get money so he can survive and travel.   Recently, He has met with a Lisk who said he was going to the Capital. Joshua has never been to the Capital. Opportunity! He now travels with his new friend Simon Renault.

We're making this happen!

Name: Sennel Wright
Gender: Male
Race: Lupe (wolf-anthro)
Specialization(s): Illusions and Spellweaving
Age: Mid thirties, though he behaviour might make you think otherwise...
Occupation: Scholar/Researcher
Weapon(s): Has a book he likes looking through, but no significant weaponry to speak of. Has a pocket knife though.
Alliance: Whoever he likes, finds interesting, or looks nice
Description: Well muscled and standing at almost two metres tall, Sennel can be a bit imposing to those new to him. His appearance is somewhat contradicted by a genteel demeanour and friendly (sometimes overly so) personality. His interest in fairies leads him to collect trinkets and ornaments decorated in their style, which only leads to the confusion.
Bio: Sennel loves fairies. He’s fascinated by them. Only met one once but it was a life-changing experience. Though far from a renowned expert, his years of study has left him with a fair knowledge of their kind, though he spends a bit too much time reading old stories and alleged accounts rather than definitive works. A result of his study is moderate skill with illusion and spellweaving (direct interaction with magic, usually involves screwing with already-cast spells). The nature of his specialization requires Sennel to temporarily distance himself from reality when he casts, causing his personality to change for a short time after every spell. Indicators include short attention span, blank look when he’s actually paying attention, occasional spouting of non-sequiters, and a tendency to hug anything nearby.

Like most Lupes, he hails from the eastern forests of Sicklen, where the species is most concentrated. Though they live in close-knit packs much like the Lisk, the Lupe social structure is an intricate web of alliances and grudges that would not look out of place in a royal court. Sennel left the forests out of curiosity of what lies beyond, and a brief encounter with a fairy sent him straight to the closest Farman city to find someone who would teach him more about the creatures. Ten years later, Sennel finds himself with a recently dead master (the guy was old!) and the job of travelling to inform his relatives and deliver a few personal belongings.

Wait... Altais approved... but not Eltanin? Awww... shoot. Forgot to set up my second twin >.< I mean I know Jenia already pretty much approved him, but I should probably post him here anyway.

Name: Eltanin
Gender: Male
Race: 'Uplifted' Blendscale
Specializations: Picking up new skills, order magic, Analyzation, and pattern recognition

What the hell that means: Like his brother, El is innate blood. Unlike his brother, El is very much Order oriented. His magic works best when there's an order to it, though the order is really only important to the person casting it. For smaller magics, he can improvise easily with stuff like quickly scrawling runes that represent in his mind what he wants to happen. Boosts can be made with objects relevant to the spell, like a rock to focus an earth spell.

Whereas his brother controls the effect, but not so much how the spell works, El has complete control over how the spell works, but doesn't have much say on the end result. This may sound odd, but what it means is if Al tries to set something on fire, it may spontaneously combust, or get hit with lightning, or maybe it'll generate a fireball with appropriate side effects. When EL tries to start a fire, he chooses one of the above (let's say spontaneous combustion) and tries to make it happen. Depending on how well a job he did and unaccounted for variables (like wet wood, no nearby oxygen, etc) it may or may not actually catch on fire.

This means that El also has spells which work best on himself and those he's very familiar with like his brother as he already knows all the variables and which way to turn them to get the desired result. The more ordered something is, the easier it is for El to work with (aka, less likely something will go wrong). This means good defense against him is unpredictability. Also like his brother, things around him will frequently begin to show signs of order in odd ways. This is a result of the brothers not having full control of their magic just yet, and while the cause may differ, it's often difficult to tell which one of them is responsible for the spilled sugar to look uncannily like the Mona Lisa or local authority or something.

On large scales, Al's magic works by alligning all of the variables just right so every domino falls right into place whereas El's works more like computer programs. When done properly, the effects can be devastating, but it's a lot like a computer program: garbage in, garbage out. In fact, El's magic for big or repeated things work a lot like a computer program. If he sets up a template for a spell he can pull in up later without having to set it up again. Also it's a useful way for him to keep track of really big spells that he's working on as they appear to him (and anyone else with mage sight) as glowing lines and figures rotating around in a 3-D diagram that he uses as an 'interface' to set up his spells in various ways.

Because El has to deal with figuring out these situations frequently, he quickly developed the skill of recognizing and accounting for ways things can go wrong. This is by the way, the analyzation and pattern recognition thing. As for picking up skills quickly, that's pretty much the label on the tin can. We're talking basic level stuff, possibly a little advanced. Nothing as crazy as learning advanced ninjitsu by watching a ninja attack.

Age: 20
Weapon of Choice: While El is quite fond of martial arts, especially using tai chi/juditsu to use an opponent's moves against them, he tends to mostly work with direct magic.

Group dynamic notes: Al is sort of impulsive and will act on the moment while El thinks long term and is more thinky about stuff. Yes this is sort of cliche'd, but it works.

What? But... I totally mentioned appearance! They look like more anthrosized versions of blendscales! It's not that hard :/

They have wings, and their digits be pointy, and also draconic snouts, but since that's all sorts of awkward in public they disguise themselves as regular blendscales disguising themselves as greenscales. With magic!

Umm... they aren't using illusions. It's physical transformation magic. I mentioned Al's good at physical enhancements right? It's not much harder for El. All they're doing is 'tucking in' their wings, claws, and snout. The color changing thing is a natural blendscale ability. If they were to be say... a lisk, then it would be harder to do that physically and they may have to resort to illusions. Natural form to blendscale's kinda easy though. You might see remnant traces of magic dusted on their hands and feet, face and back, but you wouldn't 'see through' the illusion.

Sorry, sorry. Either way, the classic "real form sight" (or "True Seeing" if you do DnD a lot) is not illegal, so either way, you have to give fellow players the option of piercing your disguise. Magically. Sorry for the confusion - hope this is clearer.

Ah, well if they used soul sight, or true form seeing or something they'd manage. But just illusion piercing would get nothing, and mage sight would only tip you off that there's an alteration spell from the glitter dust residue stuff. So long as people are reasonable about it...

.. is it too late to get in on this? ;_;

Just in case if not:

Name: Rudriger Vosslatair
Gender: Male
Race: Shilton, Farmen
Specialization(s): Skillful use of a Falchion/Master artist.
Age: 19
Occupation: Travels around selling paintings for money.
Alliance: None
Description: Rudriger is about at 5'7 height, and has a somewhat weak appearance as though he never trained a day in his life. His untidy almost snowy-white hair ends just above his shoulders and a few strands are present infront of his light brown eyes. He wears a dark brown cotton shirt under his pale brown leather vest. Also his black trousers are decorated with several pockets, perhaps hold his art supplies. To his side, a sheathed blade lays between his hand and waist, on it's silver hilt a symbol seems to have once been craved into it, however time has rendered it faded and unreadable.
Bio: Although not much is known about his past, it is known that Rudriger wandered into a small village not too far off from Stranagrar from an island off to the southeast. Rudriger's personality is very egotistical as he regards himself as "un-matched" in the fields of battle, and he is just about always
ready to prove it.  The same can also be said about his art. "If he ain't bragging about his sword, he's goin' on an' on about how perfect he can make ya look on paper." as one previously visited inn-keeper described him. Aside from his huge ego, Rudriger is also described, on many accounts, as rude, uncaring, sardonic,  and "a big meanie face". Perhaps among all these bad "opinions", his one good trait is his ability to capture "One's true soul" in his drawings.

I know, kinda short >.>...But it's a start, right? {:)

Name: Legiah Daille
Gender: Female
Race: Red Lisk
Specialization(s): Archery, work of words, short bladed weapons, and fire magic (only on impulse, however).
Age: Twenty-one
Occupation: Traveler
Weapon(s): A bow, thatch of arrows, and a shortsword (2-3 feet in length).
Alliance: None.
Description: Attuned to life of the outdoors, Legiah is darker then most Lisks, with her dusky reddish-orange fur and deep brown stockings. Her eyes are an interesting hazel-yellow, and she often wears a simple wool forest garb, not showy but comfortable.
Bio: At a young age, Legiah had a heart for travel, and longed to see the rest of the world. Often she liked to scour empty tunnels or abandoned buildings, and lived off of her ability to relay life on words. Finding solicitude an enjoyable thing, Legiah wasn't one to attract attention to herself, and preferred traveling alone. However she didn't mind talking to people once in a while, or picking up opportunities for that matter.

Honestly, nobody used 2 katanas.  Some did use a katana as well as a Wakizashi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakizashi), but it was often considered reckless and foolish, because you were trading actual control in favor of speed, though Musashi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miyamoto_Musashi) did pull it off famously well.

Before you complain, though, that all the anime characters use multiple large swords, I would like to point out that anime isn't exactly feasible.  I think Jenia's after a more realistic setting here, so at least try to do some research before saying something is more feasible if it really isn't.

(And yes, Jenia, I do still plan to make a character for this.  Just haven't had time, of late.)

Frankly, I don't care if you do like those anime people who use one katana in each hand plus another between their teeth... This is a fantasy setting, and any character who can pull the above off is simply assumed to have enormous strength, which is acceptable, as long as it follows the rules (see Ril'Trag as an example of this).

Ok seriously, kitsunes grow extra tials, its how thier magic gets stronger over time, the older they get, the more tails they get and the stronger their magical abilities are, as it is she is still in the fairly novice stage, she has decent control, stamina and enrucance in magical aspects but canot perfomr high end magic as well as older ones can. Its simply their magical genetics manifesting themselves if you want

As for the swords, i apologise it was not my intention to get on anyones bad side or seem overly self righteous or anything like that. Hows about i change the dual swords for a single good quality sword, like a Claymore? I am asking for help, not patronisation, i accpet help from others but will not accept people treating me like i am stupid or ignorant. I am not, only if you want realistic i wills tick to realistic and use my realistic combat style with the two handed claymore instad of the fancy fantasy dual sword style. In any case i was going to use the archery aspect of my character more than the swordsmanship aspect in the first place as im more comfortable with ranged combat than meelee.

Again i sincerely apologise for any misconceptions that have happened and do wish to work my charry over again, if you dont accept the reason for the tails its fine i shall simply make her a regular red fox anthro and that will be that, its not a powergameing or godmod thing, its simply a type of character i am very comfortable using as i ahve roleplayed kitsunes before.

Name: Sephiria Ambrose
Gender: Female
Race: Lisk (eritrean clan)
Specialization(s): Psionics and soul - especially Pyrokinesis.
Age: 23
Occupation: Shadow Ranger
Weapon(s): Rangers bow, 8 throwing knives and a triple fold liskan steel claymore.
Alliance: Shadow Ranger guild.
Description: Sephiria stands tall at six foot two, all eritreans like her are taller than most other lisks. She has sky blue eyes with ong, black, fiery red tipped hair, a tribal pattern in her fur next to her left eye, a birthmark of her original clan that was decimated, also the other markings, that are not foten visible on ehr body as theyre covered by her clothing. She has a scar over her right eye from training. the eye is fine. She wears the usual black cloak over black rangers garb and light mithril chainmail and anthro travelling boots made with soft, silent soles, she often wears her hood up with a facemask on, only her sky blue yes visible at times under the hood. She wears archery gauntlets and has a large carcois full of the finest arrows anyone could craft.
Bio: Sephiria was orphaned at a young age and knows little about her past before being rescued by a squad of Shadow Rangers from attacking reptilians. She didnt see who had been attacking but heard their cries and whenever she ehars such a cry her memories of the dramatic attack come back, causing her to sometimes lose control over her powers for a short period. She has been trained in the arts of tracking, silent movement,knife throwing, archery, medicine, healing and Claymore sword combat by the Shadow Rangers, a close knit and secretive guild that few know anything about safe rumours of their existence. She's grown into a splendid ranger and now scours the lands to help others who have worthy causes accomplish them, from the shadows where she cannot be seen unless she so wishes to.

I have made the modifications needed to make this character no longer unorthodox in any way...at least i hope.

I'm gonna be lame and re-make a character I used in DAL. But I didn't get to use him enough so this guy will be more awesome. Also hardly any of you played DAL, so you won't notice. Hehe.

Name: Lagart
Gender: Male
Race: Horned Zohal, Greenscale
Specializations: Physical Combat, Large bladed weapons
Age: 25
Occupation: Body Guard
Weapons: Large Broadsword
Alliance: None currently
Description: Lagart is a greenscale zohal with two horns, yet one seems to have the tip broken off and a bandage wrapped around it (despite the fact it is unnecessary). He wears baggy brown and beige clothing, with some armour plating underneath. He is an extremely large individual, standing over eight feet tall. Intellectually he is not very smart, he has the intelligence of a young child compared to human standards. Here's a sketch of him. (http://dalpedia.mysticsoftware.net/images/thumb/d/de/LagartSketch.jpg/487px-LagartSketch.jpg)
Bio: He has been on his own since he was very young and has had to take care of himself for most of his life. Many people have found him rather intimidating due to his large size and seemingly primitive nature but when people spend more time around him they discover he is in fact very friendly and caring. Due to this he has found success in being a personal body guard for hire, usually for merchants who need protection on their ventures.

reminds me... do zohal actually have horns? what about snout with pointy teeth? The appearance of my characters hasn't been changing much, but I keep having to fix what they hide and what they don't >.<

Zohal horns are optional, and are usually (but not always) a sign of mixed heritage.
Zohals do not normally have a snout, but pointy teeth are the norm.

Right, in that case my characters will not bother hiding the horns, but will continue to hide the wings. Not sure about the snouts though :/ This sounds like it could go either way...
