Title: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Virmir on August 01, 2010, 12:24:00 AM
Okay, so thought about this for a while and did some research.  Think I'm going to go through with it. [;)

Like I've seen a few artists do, I'm going to make a deck of playing cards.  Just your standard deck of 54 cards (4 suits + 2 jokers)--  That tarot stuff looks cool, but I'm not familiar with any of it. [;)  Every single card is going to be a face card and feature a different character, much like this:

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1684

I intend to get this deck printed and sell it.  I've found a few sites that offer this service, so it's just a matter of making a few cards to send in as demos and picking the best one. [:)  I'm leaning towards one that offers a print-on-demand service much like Zazzle, but there's another where I can buy in bulk affordability that looks good too. (Though I'd have to ship myself, and that'd be a pain.  So not too sure on that one.)

Now here comes the fun part.  Half of this deck is going to be my characters, and I'm going to open up the other half to the CF community to submit their own characters.  That's 26 of your characters I will be including. [:)

The suits are likely going to look like this:

Spades - Virmirs: All Virmir variations, plus a few characters from my written stories
Clubs - Crimson Flag: The Crimson Flag cast, as drawn by me
Diamonds - CF Community Foxes and Canids: Foxes and Canid characters/fursonas
Hearts - CF Community Cats and Others: Kitties and their non-canid counterparts

May tweak the last two based on response I get here. (I was originally going to make one suit Epic Battle, but not enough characters have been introduced there yet to avoid spoilers. [;))  Also, have ideas for the Jokers, but we'll see... [;)

Submissions are closed! Thanks for submitting, folks. [:)

If you'd like to submit a character for consideration, please post below!  You can submit as many characters as you like.  Note that I'm not going to accept everyone's characters and some people may get more than one character put in.  I'm picking and choosing who I think will work best for the project.  I might lean more towards a fantasy feel for the entire deck, but will see what I get to work with first. [:)

Please note that I'm selling this deck, and by posting below you give me rights to sell artwork of your character (as drawn by me) for the purposes of this deck only.  Also... don't freak out/get depressed if I make you a 2 or something.  2's can be a lifesaver in black jack, anyway. [;)

EDIT: Also note that I'm not taking requests on who gets what number.  I'll decide that. [;)

EDIT 2: Also forgot to mention that there's a chance I'll be reusing some artwork I've already done.  80% of this or so will probably be new drawings though.

EDIT 3: Ooops, yes, please post references if I haven't drawn you or your character before. [;)

If Yuro's chimera and my Feathertail character were on it, that would be awesome. ^.^ You know you want to practice drawing birds, for variety!

Wow, this is awesome! I think I'll buy these if sold!
And I'd gladly be in it, but I don't really have a solid, set-in-stone form. So... I guess I can either bug you about it, or you can bug me about it!  |:)

Hell yeah! I'm in if you want to add me. I'll be famous when I'm in everybody's winning poker hand!

>_>

So yeah, If you want you can use my main character/fursona |:)
I haven't fully developed any other character enough to consider posting it here, so only Ethaniel.

I think I'd like to be in this, though I doubt I have anything that would fit the fantasy theme, feel free to use Dr. Richardson (aka SCIENCE! fox), which you've drawn before.  One other possibility would be Simon Renault, (http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk258/Cyberfoxfinal/GIMP%202/SimonRenault600x825.jpg) who is somewhat close.

I would totally want to do this. any of the number cards is good with me.
Might I formally request one of the joker cards be a sandwich though? You don't need to if you don't want, but it would be really cool.
at least I think so anyway.

First, of course, my Fursona, Kenku:

and fourth, my WildRabbits character, Tallgrass

Use who you think will help fill out the deck ^^

Well I am unsure if I can have 2 cards but I am going to give you lots of freedom on this one.

Twin Hanse pic. Basically this will work perfectly for those pesky jack-king cards. a perfectly mirrorable pose, possibly with a different funny/random face. I'll see if I can draw this up to see what it'd look like. OL Hanse is preferred as his clothes are nice and flowy.

Innocence Donnie - OL or Feral Donnie playing with a single shape or tinkering. Example: Feral Donnie clinging to an ace or nomming it, OL Donnie slapping a ton of gears and random slabs of wood to whatever background, forming the shapes or adding to it. I am a bit off in the mind right now so I will see more later.

And since you 'asked' Virmir, an Iasha would be neat for a queen, you wouldn't want a big manly cougar for a queen card would you?  [:P. Honestly the pose I am unsure of, but I am a fan of those mirrored poses for the big cards so it'd at least have to be one. I could partially design it if you desire  [;)

Also I know how much you like Greg... so he's free for all too [;). Any form is okay.

Reference time!

OL Hanse - Solid body but a terribly light heart. Hanse can rarely be seen not grinning or in another sort of positive attitude. When he gets stressed... it is another story. Never gives up hope until... well all hope is lost! Kiba says a good comparison is Guy Sensei from Naruto... which I felt is kinda odd o_o but fitting. Haha.

3D (Adventurer's outfit) http://vengencemkii.deviantart.com/art/Disturbance-Battle-171899469
This outfit has short sleeves, a shoulder and thigh cape. Very flowy. If you use this he'd have an artifact in hand.
Level 100 (Supreme Honor Garb) http://vengencemkii.deviantart.com/art/Do-Not-Avert-those-Eyes-158732120
The cut sleeves are even farther up and LONGER than ever! Complete with a thigh cape, this Hanse is ultra flowy and will always carry that huge blue sword. He can have his serious face on here but a grin is always welcome!
Standard http://vengencemkii.deviantart.com/art/Smile-for-the-Camera-Silray-155045832
This Hanse is... average. Normal grin. Nothing exciting >_> boooo

OL Donnie http://vengencemkii.deviantart.com/art/Believe-and-he-Shall-Make-it-155097170
Key words: Exceedingly Cute. He's small and adorable, nothing more =3.
Feral Donnie http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/096/4/3/Vengence_Icon_by_nishastar.png
Key Words: Even MORE cute than anthro version!

Iasha http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2838032
High class, thin, pretty. Also lots of guns =3. Preferably a wheel lock musket

Since Diamonds is red... I'd say go Red form, but go nuts. Remember, Greg is officially a true Gray Fox now, so he has black tail and ears. He's like you now!

Well, I'll add my other characters, just for kicks. ;3 Don't think they are car material...but...*shrugs* Also...need to make ref picture someday...

Ronts - Bearish-dogish fuzzy dementor (emotion scavenger) http://traxer.deviantart.com/art/Peeps-and-a-Guillotine-124059654

Veat - Dream Weaver, fuzzy blue dragonish thing. http://traxer.deviantart.com/art/Veat-and-Veat-137567608 (one on left)

Rex - Fox of leather letter jacket and bloody sense of humor. http://traxer.deviantart.com/art/Soulless-Puppy-Dog-Eyes-157607829

Fluff - Monster-under-the-bed, plush penguin and monster forms...never use as chew toy http://traxer.deviantart.com/art/Stalking-90485685

BJ - Fuzzy six-armed face-hugger. Need I say more? (same as Rex's)

I love custom card decks, and you totally have my permission to use my character. I typically identify with the Ace of Spades (spades representing intelligence and ace being both the highest and lowest card simultaneously representing my intelligent spacing out) but I somehow doubt I'm gonna get that one ^.^ I also really like jacks, and seven is a good number as is four. In the end it's up to you of course, but let me know if you want something other than the one you did for me in the snow cause I don't actually have any references ;>.> Let me know what you want (and of course 'if') and I'll give you a general character description you should be able to work off of like last time.
/me is insanely curious about the jokers btw...

Got a jump using some stock images.  Will be slower going from here on out, obviously. [;)

Ace of SpadesQueen of SpadesJack of SpadesTen of SpadesNine of SpadesEight of SpadesNine of Clubs

Also, black suits will have a blue-ish border as shown here, while red suits will have a red one.

Full list of spades and clubs has been tacked on to first topic.  Still deciding on the other two suits. [:)

Ooh!  This sounds like fun!  I might even opt to do my own deck, sometime.

Count me in, you can use my 'sona (either adult, as in group shot, or cutesy, as in "I Feel...").

Feel free to use Kheros or Beastling.  I'd love to see them show up in a deck of cards.

Are the lower numbers/symbols supposed to be upside-down?
Title: Re: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Tvorsk on August 11, 2010, 03:33:43 PM
Yes, Jonas, as in "regular cards" there's no upside down, they're perfectly mirrored (well, except for odd numbers, where the center symbol would be facing one of the ends) - even the "character cards" are split, either horizontally or diagonally, and display a mirrored image.

It's still better to keep the corner number this way, as it makes for easier reading of the card value, no matter which way up the card has been dealt to you.

Post by: Virmir on August 11, 2010, 06:33:35 PM
Yep.  I considered making the mirrored half-images like standard playing cards, but couldn't stand the thought of leaving so many fluffy tails out. [;)

Anyway,  next!

Six of Spades

Canidae is the biological family of carnivorous and omnivorous mammals that includes the wolves, foxes, jackals, coyotes, and the domestic dog; a member of this family is called a canid. The Canidae family is divided into the "wolf-like" and "dog-like" animals of the tribe Canini and the "foxes" of the tribe Vulpini. The two species of the basal Caninae are more primitive and do not fit into either tribe.

Okay, the test run came in!  Some pics:

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1795
http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1798

Overall, some mixed feelings.  But most of it is stuff I can fix.

First, card quality is quite nice.  You can definitely play with these without fear of damaging them.  However they do not "feel" like normal playing cards.  Think... the title deeds from a Monopoly set.  [;)  Still, they're toughly built and you'd still be able to play poker with them just fine.

I was kind of hoping for rounded corners... but they are square.  Oh well.

As for the color quality.... you can see a just a bit of grain in flat colors if you look really hard, but it's nothing noticeable.  A lot of the colors came out too dark unfortunately.  This is mainly my fault, as I have my Tablet PC's colors set too bright apparently (this has been pointed out to me in the chat a few times).  This is something I need to adjust on my end for all of my art, so I will be doing this this weekend, and then very likely adjust the colors for all of the cards-- especially the Virmir ones which need the most tweaking. (Also it could be the lighting in my bedroom, but my gray fur seems to have come out just a tad purplish... phooey. [;))  The Fennec is the brightest of the bunch and he looks awesome.

The borders on the front of the cards came out a tad too subtle.  It looks like a solid color unless you look more closely.  I think I'm going to fancy these up a bit.

The backs look awesome!  I was a tad too hesitant to have content spill over into the borders, so I think the border on the edges came out a tad too big in the actual printing.  I'm going to resize these so the borders are a bit smaller.

And finally, the HUGE facepaw moment...

Totally did NOT realize that I inverted the blasted numbers in the corners from where EVERY other playing card has them until I fanned them out in my hand and said, "Waaaaait a minute..." *facepaws*

So... will be swapping the numbers to opposite corners too. [;)

So in short, looks promising, just need to do a fair amount of work on my end.  I'll make some changes this weekend and send out another test run.  Probably going to have a ton of rejected cards lying around before I get everything juuuuust right. [;)

Well, photos seem to agree with you on all points, including the slight tint on the gray... I'm not 100% sure how much of these is the CCD noise of your camera, but comparing the (indeed, dark and with visible color printpoints) VirBot with that regular card next to it seems to be saying "not much". {:(
On the other paw, Mara seems to have almost a fluorescent glow, but this might be caused by the lighting. Backs are epic... and GREAT. {;)
Said that, your images always seemed bright enough to me, tho might be that both of us have the screens set to hi-brightness and 6500K white temp.

Btw, you may want to email or otherwise ask if the printing company would be happier with a CMYK-colorspace images, as used for printing, and if so, switch Photoshop to that mode - IIRC it has a print proofing mode that warns you if you use colors outside of safely printable range... but of course, that's a complex function neither of us knows how to use properly, so... might not actually be so great of an idea. {:(

In any case, good lick! *slurps*

PS. Who cares about numbers being in opposite corners? Be Different! {;)
Title: Re: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Jonas on September 17, 2010, 10:38:17 AM
How pointy are the edges? I find that to be an important issue with square cards. Pointy affects both how easy they are to crease and cause the lamination to peel off. Also, pointy cards can HURT!
Title: Re: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Virmir on September 17, 2010, 01:37:53 PM
They're not so pointy as to injure you, but it's a good right angle.  Probably don't want to poke people in the eye, anyway. [;)  Tod says his cards have rounded corners though... so I will contact them this weekend and ask why mine came out square.

The printers need the files in RBG format.

As far as opposite corners, they look just fine until you fan them out in your hand... that's when I noticed.  I'm used to having the number in the upper left, so instinctually place the cards so that corner is visible.  Everyone who has ever played cards will do this as well, and it will infuriate them (myself included), if the numbers are on the opposite sides. [;)

Making sure, they are laminated, right?  When I think monopoly title deeds, I don't think they're laminated much at all, just glossy.  Most playing cards are laminated, and that's how you get the nice, smooth feel.
Title: Re: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Virmir on September 17, 2010, 09:25:49 PM
Hmm, I'm not sure, actually.  They are definitely smooth to the touch and shiny.  But I'm not entirely sure if that means they're laminated, though.

Okay, new cards are up!

(http://art.by.virmir.com/i/thumb/spades_A.png) (http://art.by.virmir.com/art/spades_A)

I overwrote the old ones, so hit refresh if the old ones still show up (on art.by.virmir.com).  Changes:

- Reduced border size on the card backs, so detail is a bit larger.

- Flipped the blasted numbers.

- Doubled the size of the detail on the borders of card fronts (it looked like nearly a solid color on the test print)

- Tweaked brightness, contrast, and tint on all the images.  In general, they're all lighter.  This is just a guess based how the printed cards look in my hand.  Will be sending a few variations of two or three cards in to get it just right too.

Next step is to order test deck number two, and then back to drawing. [:)

You need not apologize for making awesomely detailed characters I want to draw. [;)

Okay, second test printing is in!

Like last time, some issues.  Here are some pics.

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1819
http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1828
http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1822
http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1825

As mentioned a few posts ago, the provider (The Game Crafter), ditched their old printing service/methods and got a new one.  Therefore these cards look like they have been printed by a totally different company.

Good things:

- They "feel" more like playing cards. A bit thinner perhaps, but these feel more like something I'd play poker with, and not title-deed-esque like the old batch.  I rather like this. [:)  They are still a bit thinner, and less tough than normal playing cards, mind you, but still quite sturdy.

- Rounded corners!

- The print quality is better.  Comparing the old and new cards side-by-side, the old ones look a tad blurry now. Yay. [:)

- My adjustments to the border look great. [:)

Some reservations:

- As I tried to capture in the bottom two pics above, some cards are very obviously not centered well.  I'd say about a third of the 26 cards I had printed make me shift my eyes to various degrees.

- Some cards have sort of a rough edge to them.  It's not like they'll fray or anything, but there's just this weird crease to a few of them.

- The cards arrived just slightly bent...  I think it might be due to how they were squished in the packaging.  I am currently squishing them underneath a giant heavy jar of penny, so will report how well they flatten out. [;)

- This printer is even darker than the last... I'm going to have to lighten these up even more for the next run.  Not a huge deal.

----

In short:  I'm pleased except for the off-centering.  It just plain looks bad, and looks to be a random thing.  I followed the rules when making the templates, and the cut edges are indeed outside the "safe zone", which means that even the off-center cards are inside the acceptable margin of error according the template.  I'm not entirely sure I like this margin of error to be so large, so will think about this more.

One possible solution is to design a background with less obvious borders.  I'm not really sure I want to do this though.

Thoughts and feedback appreciated.  We shall see. [;)

Well, you sure should poke them about it... Even assuming they have a typo here https://www.thegamecrafter.com/publish/production/game-card-production , and mean "2 mm", not "0.2 mm" this seems to be quite a bit more (tho, checking with a ruler would be a good idea, if only to tell them how much off-center it is). Also, consider that your order was one of the first after the swap, maybe they'll calibrate the machines better...
Title: Re: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Virmir on October 03, 2010, 01:21:32 PM
Okay, to update with what was established in the chat:

The first print run was outsourced from The Game Crafter (TGC, who I'm currently dealing with), to a company called Superior Print On Demand (SPOD).  TGC terminated their (apparently) brief relationship with their company, and are now back to printing their cards "in house".

Unfortunately, TGC is notoriously bad at getting the blasted things centered.  They only guarantee the cards not to have anything cut off in the template's "safe zone".  Which unfortunately is a fairly wide margin of error.  This is a real shame because I *really* like everything else about their cards, and especially like how they will be sold directly from their site with no additional work from me once everything's all said and done.

However I have found SPOD's site, and I can order from them directly too.  The main problem with them is that I will have to order batches to be shipped to me, and then I have to ship them myself.... this would be a major pain.  Plus, looking at the original cards I got, I don't like they way the cards printed quite as much when compared to the latest batch, and they have square corners.  On the plus side, they are capable of getting the things centered fairly well. (Looking at the first batch, there are some slight centering issues, but not nearly as bad as TGC's.)

The Plan

I am going to order a test deck from SPOD with a bunch of color variations to see if I can get them looking right.  If they manage to impress me, I will consider ordering a "limited run" from them (maybe 15-20 decks or so, depending on interest) which I will sell and ship out personally.

I will also be ordering another test deck from TGC with adjustments to the cards for darkness.  Assuming I like SPOD, TGC will be a "fall back" for people who don't mind the off-centering, or after I run out of cards from the limited run.

If I find another printer, will certainly try them as well. [;)

/me is going to have tons and tons of reject-cards lying around... [;)

CARD REPORT '10

My order from SPOD came in *extremely* quickly.  This pleases me.  (TGC hasn't even shipped yet, as of this writing.)

New pictures!

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1837
http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1840

Pictured are only about 1/3rd of the cards.  I sent in three variations of most, and what is pictured is the set I like the best.

To be honest... I'm very surprised!  These turned out quite nice.

- The blasted things are much better centered!  There are some centering issues if you look for them, but they did a much better job than TCG.

- Corners are rounded, and the cards "feel" nice.

- Very few cards have a tiny errant dot of blue or red randomly on them... almost like an ink splatter or something.  These are few and far between and barely noticeable, and I don't think this is a big deal.

In short... based on this printing, it looks to me that SPOD is my best bet to deliver a quality product.  Unfortunately this means I will have to ship out orders myself, which as I mentioned before, would be a huge pain.  I'm going to see how the next set of cards ordered from TGC comes back, and then make some decisions.

EDIT: BONUS QUESTION!

SPOD offers a custom tuck-box printing (i.e. a nice little box you can stick the cards in).  This looks really cool.  Do you guys think it'd be worth paying a few dollars more for this? Will probably only cost $2 more or so. [:)

Well, seems it could use some more color adjustment - the red numbers seem kinda pink-ish, my light brown is way too yellow, and so on. Speaking of, that (especially the pink-ish issue) sounds quite like a CMYK<->RGB conversion mismatch... do SPOD says anything about sending them CMYK templates?

"Errant dot" sounds like they'd be using offset printing, and not be scrubbing the plates ideally clean in between... in any case, yay for centering! {:P

I shouldn't comment about the box... it'd probably look really nice, especially compared to "generic" one or complete lack of... but that's even more to the cost, and I wouldn't be able to pay for the deck either way.

Hmmm, looking again at the photo, that's an issue with my camera. [;)  The red is actually vibrant and looks great.  The pictured ones actually are tinted yellow slightly to compensate for their printers, but the camera tinted them further.  I'm rather pleased with the coloring, actually.  Sorry for the confusion!

Also, it's amusing how vastly different these things look under different lighting.  If I look at them by sunlight coming in through the window, they look fantastic.  At night if I look at them under the light from my ceiling fan, my fur almost looks a tad purple-ish. [;)

Blah Colour correction is such a problematic thing... Getting ones monitor to look like ones prints ends up as an expensive and sometimes futile exercise! ]:P

I say if it looks alright in day light.. just leave it as it is!

p.S: What is the bulb type for your ceiling fan anyway Virmir?

Yeah, I'm fairly certain the one adjusted batch pictured will be the one I'm using for SPOD. [:)

I use those new-ish energy saver bulbs, with the swirly coils. [;)  There's a frosted glass shade under them, which probably distorts the color a bit too.

Two cards for today!

Done with diamonds! 39/54 [:)

Also, I got the test printing from TGC yesterday. [:) I'm not going to post pictures this time because they are all starting to look the same (and the colors turn out differently in the camera, anyway [;))

Basically, they turned out better centered this time.  I'm not sure if them turning out nicely is a fluke, or the bad centering last time was the fluke.  SPOD still printed them better centered, but this batch was in acceptable ranges, I'd say. Will be buying one last test deck from them for sure to see.

I like their print quality better than SPOD's... the only thing is, TGC prints insanely darkly.  It's difficult to adjust the colors to get them to look decent (whereas I've already decided on which color/brightness filter I want to apply to SPOD's).  Also, I hear from Tod that his deck turned out much too darkly as well, and that they are going to be adjusting their printers soon to try to fix this... so I'm thinking I'm going to wait a bit before ordering another test deck from them.

Card Update!!!

I have found a third contender, this one Custom Design and Printed (http://www.customdesignprinted.com) (henceforth CDP) and have ordered a test deck from them with a few color variations.

Initial impression... these guys are way more professional presentation-wise, especially their upload software.  They do offer to sell my product from their site, which would be great too.  They are a bit more pricey, though.  On the flip side, their shipping prices are much more reasonable. In the end, a full deck still comes out to a few dollars more than the other two places, but we'll see what kind of product they deliver.  If the blasted things are centered and look good, it will be worth it. [;)

We shall see!

And... three stock image cards to get things started for the hearts. [;)

(http://art.by.virmir.com/i/thumb/nine_of_hearts.png) (http://art.by.virmir.com/art/nine_of_hearts)(http://art.by.virmir.com/i/thumb/eight_of_hearts.png) (http://art.by.virmir.com/art/eight_of_hearts)(http://art.by.virmir.com/i/thumb/three_of_hearts.png) (http://art.by.virmir.com/art/three_of_hearts)

Also, as you probably noticed I made some adjustments to the heart suit.  I thought it better to have all the 2s to be a smaller, cutesy character.  So I swapped Tod's Sparrow for West form Ekwara.  (I really wanted to draw Sparrow though... so maybe later. [;))  By result is most of the suit got bumped up one number. [;)

Ah, so you did go with the stock image for me. Can't say I'm terribly surprised ^.^

However when you put those pictures next to each other, I can't help but notice certain traits in common. Namely the tail and body position of me and Alias.

As for my new status as an eight? I mildly torn between eight being an awesome number, and seven being an awesome number. I do find it appropriate that Alias is now number nine ;)

Blast it... I totally did not realize the similarities until you pointed them out... [;)  That was a serious problem in my art work, and I'm trying to vary poses more and more as I go on.  I'm actually very tempted to go back and draw new stuff for the old pics... but at the same time, I really want to get this project done. We shall see... [;)

Then the previous sets with older art can become collecter's edition sets! Or something.

Well the Idea is sorta interesting in the fact that.. (from a purely egocentric/capitalist point of view) those who weren't drawn may be less likely to decide to purchase a deck, since they weren't featured in it.

If Virmir were to change the Diamonds and Hearts suites with different characters around for the new decks, keeping the virmir/Cf decks the same,  he could theoretically sell more! ]:P

Anyway as far as I know thats highly unlikely to happen anyway, since by now Vir's throughly sick of making the cards. ]:)

CARD UPDATE

Tuck boxes from SPOD!

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1875

These turned out really nice.  If I do ship from home, I will definitely ship in these. [:)  They are thin cardboard and not terribly durable, but they seem to work just fine.  I don't have any other tuckboxes to compare them with.

The flattened one on the left has some faint guidelines I printed just to be sure things lined up. [;)  The other two and any further ones won't have those, obviously.

Also, I took another look at SPOD's website and it seems they do offer services for selling from their site... it's just not automated and apparently I have to contact them.   I will look into this.

Still no word on the deck I ordered from CDP (the third company).

CARD UPDATE!

The deck from the third company, CDP, came in today! My camera messes up the colors, mind you, but here's a pic anyway. [;)

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1881

My first reaction was, "ugh, they printed these waaaaay too faded".  And then I did a double-take and realized that, hey, it's not that they're too light... they're just not ridiculously dark like the other cards!  I was just so used to getting things back waaaaaay too dark, it threw me for a loop. [;)  I'm very pleased with how these turned out!

Points:

* Colors are very nice!  In all my blasted adjustments to the coloration/brightness, I did not even bother sending them any unmodified, "pure" cards.  By the looks of things, I may very well go with unmodified cards for them.

* I actually like the darker borders from the other cards.  So I will probably send them darker ones.  No big deal.

* Cards seem a bit thinner than the other contenders, but nice and sturdy still.  I like them being thinner because they're more like real playing cards.

* No contender is safe from centering issues.  This batch has them too, but not so bad.  This is just something I'm going to have to accept moving forward.  Looking through them, I'd have to say this is the best of the bunch so far, though.

* Corners are even more nicely round than the others.  Cards are nicely cut too.

I will think about this some more, but I will very likely go with these folks.  They cost a few dollars more than the others, but they clearly deliver a better product.  This company is from Hong Kong (of course [;)), however I got the deck after two and a half weeks, which isn't bad at all.

Will keep you folks updated!

Also interesting, the three contenders side-by-side and how different the blasted things look:

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1884

From left to right, CDP, TGC, SPOD.  (The images printed on the TGC are adjusted, both front and back, but the other two are exactly the same-- just different printers).

Blast it, why things can't ever be easy?

See, I find dealing with overseas companies to be quite risky... but, indeed, at least in the photos it's the set looking closest to how the images are looking on my screen. Well, except the fact that Avelina is red to a glowing intensity... but I guess it's one of the "adjustments". Either way, it's only one where Virmir's gray, not blueish. >.>

Honestly, I'd say to just go with SPOD and be done with it... but well, it's your decision.

CDP allows me to sell right from their site, manageable by their control panel. (Just like TGC.)  That's a huge incentive to go with them right there.  There's a fair chance I'll go with more than one though, so we'll see. [;)

CARD UPDATE

Okay, the final proof from TCG has arrived. [:)

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1903
http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1906

(Remember, my camera is lame and colors are off.)

This looks pretty good!  Once again they delivered without any major centering issues. (Again, it's not perfect, but it's passable.)  As this is the fourth deck I got from them (not including the very first), I'm going to assume the very badly centered batch was due to them just setting up their new printers.  All the images are modified to accommodate for their crazy-dark printers, and they look quite nice now! I will definitely be going with these folks. [:)

I'm still awaiting another potential final proof from CDP (the Hong Kong one).  If this deck looks nice too, I will also sell cards from them.  They might be a better option for people outside the US.

SPOD is now officially out.  They do sell directly from their site, but I need to set things up with them manually, and I much prefer TCG's web interface.  Also comparing SPOD's cards side-by-side with the other two contenders, they look a little grainy...

This means decks will NOT come with the nifty tuckbox pictured a few pages back.  However, I will provide the PDF file for people to print out and assemble themselves if they have cardstock or something. [:)

Also I can order more tuckboxes and decks separately and stick the two together and sell/ship them myself... Knowing that you can print the box yourself, would anyone be interested in paying a bit more to buy a deck with a (professionally printed) box directly from me?  I suppose I could sign it or something to make it worth it. [;)  I'm estimating you will be able to buy decks shipped (to the US) for around $17-$18.  A deck with a box from me would probably be something like $22 (a few more dollars outside the US.)  I'm not entirely sure, as I need to see how many boxes I'll need to order and how much shipping that would cost me, etc.  If there is interest, I will consider this. [:)

EDIT: To clarify, TCG cards have been color and brightness adjusted, and I no longer look purple. [;)
Title: Re: Virmir-Cards Project
Post by: Virmir on November 17, 2010, 05:49:15 PM
Okay... so international shipping prices are absolutely absurd for TCG, and there's no way at all they are feasible for anyone outside the US...

CDP will definitely be the option for international customers. [;)

Okay, to clarify on the shipping situation, the other company that I will be offering cards from (CDP, the Hong Kong one), shouldn't have outragous shipping prices for outside the US.  So they would be the ones to choose if you live outside the US.  (Actually, I need to verify this...)

HOWEVER

This is a moot point for most people here because PRE-ORDERS ARE NOW OPEN! (http://cards.virmir.com/)

http://cards.virmir.com/

Details are in the above link.  Main points are 1) I will ship all pre-ordered cards myself, so shipping prices are reasonable for everyone (and much less than I estimated before, now that I sat down and did the math [;)), and 2) TUCKBOXES!!

EDIT: Don't forget, pre-orders END on November 27th.  I don't want to run this too long before I order cards. [;)

This is just a reminder that pre-orders end on November 27th!  If you want a signed tuckbox, this will be your only chance. [:)

http://cards.virmir.com/

Ideally you'll be able to send payment by that time, but if you need a bit more time and can guarantee it to me soon after, that works too!  I aim to order all the needed decks on the 28th. [:)

List of pre-orders!

If you paid and are NOT on this list, contact me right away!

If you want to pre-order and get a signed tuckbox, please do so in the next 24 hours! http://cards.virmir.com/

(If not, you can just buy them regularly, without the custom tuckbox for a comparable price shortly. [;))

If you are DEFINITELY interested in a pre-order, but are waiting for payment to clear or something else and can't pay by tomorrow but can do so within a few days, please contact me right away!  A late payment is fine.  I just need to know how many to order when I do so on the 28th.

Pre-order List:

KaiAdin (x2)
Pontos
Tvorsk
Aleph (Will get back to you on the you-know-what. [;))
Jonas (Pending payment, but I'll order one for you.  Pay when you're ready. [:))
Medik Jackal
Kenku (Pretty sure that's you. [;))
Dragyn
Geary
Traxer
2dogsandaDJ
RadioactiveToast
LurkingWolf (I'm going by your above post that you are interested, so will order a copy for you. If you get in late, no big deal. If you change your mind, no big deal. [:))

Thanks, folks. [:)

Pre-orders are now CLOSED!

Thanks, everyone!  I'm ordering the decks right now.  Everyone listed above will get one, along with the signed tuck-box.  To the people I'm awaiting payment on, please contact me within a week to verify you're still interested.  If not, I'll probably make these decks available too.

Standard orders are now open!

http://cards.virmir.com/

You can now order cards directly from the two providers listed in the above link.  Thanks for your support everyone!  This has been a fun project. [:)

Pre-order Update

I have the pre-order cards!  They will be shipping in nice little white boxes. [:)

http://gallery.virmir.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1939

However, I do NOT have the tuckboxes yet.  SPOD has elevated my order to "under review", so I expect they will print them soon.  (I love how TCG printed all the cards and shipped them to me BEFORE SPOD even printed 5 sheets of tuckboxes... [;))

Assuming I get the tuckboxes by this Saturday, I should be able to start shipping these starting Monday the 13th.  International orders may be delayed if the post office is insane, or it's snowing too hard... *twitch*

Will keep you updated!

Yeah, TCG was nice enough to ship them in a huge box, with all those little boxes in it.  I was planning to send them in sturdy envelopes I have, but these are much nicer. They'll cost me a bit more to ship, but on the other hand I'm saving my envelopes, so will cost less in the end. [:)

Card Update

Tuckboxes have arrived!  All that's left is to assemble everything and print shipping labels!

I had to work this morning, but managed to get two packaged and out to the mailbox before the carrier came. [;)

Shipped (12/10)

Dragyn
Geary

All other US orders will ship tomorrow (12/11) and Monday (12/13).  (I can only fit so many in my mailbox, so have to split them. [;))  These are shipped 1st class, which advertises 2-5 business day delivery.  It's the holiday season, so it may take a bit longer though.

International orders will ship Monday, provided I am not snowed in... [;)

(If you're late to the game, buy your cards here! http://cards.virmir.com/)

All others have been shipped!

(Except, still holding on to yours, Toast, until after your trip. [;))

That's one project completely done and over with.  Thanks again, folks. [:)

One more time: Cards may be bought direct from the printers here! http://cards.virmir.com/

Wow, that was quick.  These things arrived only two days after you shipped them Virmir; I probably didn't have to wait until after break at all.  MUCH better then receiving a package of a bunch of already voided blank checks I have to say. ]:P
