That makes sense. He didn't kill Luciano becos' that would be anti-climatic later on in Season 1.

Probably went after the cripple instead of the kill after Lucian gave himself away with the shield.

I half suspect that Julian fully expected Lucian to not join him/chase after him...

First time I read this part, a thought came to my head. It sounded: "I wonder if he will arrange a marriage between Lucian and Queen Avelina?"
Then picture a scene were the queen stands ready for marriage (against here will) saying to Julian: "I Will not marry you!" "It's not my you're going to marry, my dear." Then our three heroes storms in: "Ok father; Stop this madness at once, I don't want to kill you!" "A Lucian! Your just in time for your wedding, my son!" Every bodies stare goes between Lucian and Julian. "My... WHAT?!?"
