Okay, just got here, what fantasy world is he from where wizards don't join guilds? Or is he just so full of himself that he won't serve in any way?

The main context is virmir world (https://world.virmir.com/comic.php?story=1&page=1). The short answer is that Virmir definitely is that full of himself, but wizards in that world do also seem to occupy a very privileged position in society. Mostly because people fear a powerful wizard.
