Find some reference pictures of things you like and just go for it!

Thanks for the advice. I decided to look back at some old art, seeing what I could improve, and I found the sword I created for my character, Cosmic Crafter. The symbols are standard galactic alphabet (Looks like mysterious runes, so why not?) for Cosmic.
