Right, so I've stated once or twice in chat I've wanted to make a webcomic, and I was told it might be a good idea to make a thread about it so...
I wish to start a webcomic anywhere between a month from now to a year or two, depending mostly on how confident I am on my art. I have a few ideas, but that's where you guys come in, I need some help here.
I need ideas/support.
My current list of characters:
N/A
(Sub-Idea, One based off of myself)
My current list of theme ideas:
Steampunk Medieval
Mecha
(Sub-idea, Schizo-tech-mecha [This means basically Guns, Swords, and Magick])
(EDIT) World Ideas (Added because of much thinking after Dragyn's comment.)
A Utopia
A Civil War
An Alien Invasion
World War Three
The Past
Alternate History
Modern Time
Apocalyptic Future
Anything is appreciated! (Save those annoying comments that are only here to make me angry or discourage me. I hate those.)

Alright, here's my 2 cents:
The single most important thing you need now isn't the characters, but the world itself. Start doodling buildings, landscapes, and similar things until you start to find some that you like.
Only once you've got somewhere for the characters to exist can you really figure out who they are.
By the way, what do you mean when you say mecha? Is that a super-advanced spaceflight capable mecha as part of an army? Would it be a prototype, or would they be everywhere? Does it take a crew, or can a single pilot control it without a problem?
As for steampunk...there's a lot of variance within that theme. If that's the way you choose to go, remember again that it's your comic. Don't let the people who argue that steampunk is a certain thing dissuade you.
-
By Mecha, I mean a very expensive, special-op exclusive single-pilot robot, size ranges. (From slightly larger than the pilot to multiple stories.) Some of the larger ones require two or more people to operate. A few prototypes for space-flight are being made, although a few variants made to go into the atmosphere do exist. Flying mechs also exist.
Thanks for the input.

Sounds like you're off to a great start.
For the setting I'm thinkin' cyberpunk. Like as in, fully-automated future-tech world. This can go several possible directions, but you should determine what you wanna do first. Is technology better or worse for everyone? Is it a free utopia, or an oppressive autocracy?
But that's just me.
-
I am of the exact opposite opinion of Dragyn in that I think the characters are more important than the setting in terms of what you should design first. [;) For me really the plot is most important, and then I construct characters based on what is required for the plot, then secondarily setting based on what is required for the plot and characters. Although sometimes the characters lead the way, and plot and setting mold to fit them. Depends on the situation. I never build the world first. Not saying Dragyn is wrong, but just approaches this in a different way. [:)
I for one am a fan of fantasy/magic, but seems like you're veering away from that, he he he. Best of luck! Excited to see what you put out. [:)

Cyberpunk, eh? I never knew what that was before today. Anyways, to answer your questions, it depends on what setting I choose. Although I doubt I will lean to the point of wanting a "free" utopia.

As for this, let it be known I WANT to implement magic in some way or another, and hopefully throw in some medieval stuffs as well, but again, it depends on what I choose.
Also, as a sidenote, it appears people seem to be leaning more towards the "techy" ideas. I like that. Never tried such a thing before.
-
Well if you threw in medieval stuff in a tech world, it'd be little less than Star Wars. {fox}
So you wanna write a story about opression? Unfortunately, (from what I gather,) there's no purity in that. Your comic will be viewed primarily as propoganda, so be prepaired to research your facts to backup your cynical viewpoint. On the other hand, if the setting is utopia, people won't care about any associated politics, and will better enjoy the comic, as will you.

First of all, I don't see how that would make it like Star Wars, I plan solid, metal weapons, not flashy super laser beams of super cut. I may put in a few laser weapons, but for the most part, it would stick with solid and projectile weapons.
Secondly, if I did make something involving an opressive government/ruler/dictator, I would most likely try to avoid today's politics and probably choose something more like it uses the Code of Hamurabi or something of the like. Alternatively, I could have multiple "factions" that would have different types of ruling/government. That would probably allow the most diversity.
A "free" utopia is still an option however.

How about a time clash? The past enters the future ?

Not sure if I could make such a thing work...

Here is my silly idea, I like medieval fantasy stuff, with maybe a touch of steampunk? But what would be an interesting take is making it very RPG-ish, with stats and stuff hehe, damage being in numbers and all that. [;)

Heh, ever heard of the .hack manga? That's literally about an RPG game. Your idea is noted though.
-
Actually I do remember that. [:)
-
So, you have nothing to add besides your "silly" idea?
-
Hehe, well not currently. [:)

Must be an evil villain in this comic...
-
I submit 2dogs as evil villian number 2.

I will see what I can do. (insert cynical grin)

I submit 2dogs as evil villian number 2.
That sounds like a rather low title :<
-
Draykin, consider this my first official poking of you.
Evil Emperor 2Dogs does have a certain ring to it...
(Yet again, I remind you, as I am prone to doing, to do what you want to do. If an idea strikes you as something you want to do, though, don't let my constant nagging keep you from doing it.)
Hmm...Evil Emperor 2Dogs, Commander of the Bronze Legion of steampunk mechas!
It sounds cool to me, but see my above parenthetical. [;)
-

THAT.
IS.
GENIUS!
Not to mention problem solving and helpful!
-
Now we need a main villian as well... Hmmm...
I submit Shadow Virmir as the main villian!
-

... Really Tirien?
-
Hmm...well now that we have such a villian, one must ask...how did he come to power?
-
Hmm...well now that we have such a villian, one must ask...how did he come to power?
And that is why this is an idea thread.
-
Well, it would prove Virmir to be evil... Heehee.
-
Well anyhow, what does your world look like? That way we can provide the right ideas.

I am leaning towards the schizo-tech-mecha theme, and I will most likely make multiple factions, each with their own "level" of technology, one could say. (IE, Steampunk-ish, cyberpunk-ish, modern-ish, etc.) For what it looks like geographically, I am still unsure. Mostly will depend on other decisions that will be made at a later date.
-
Different levels of tech sounds like a formally divided world, like groups of small continents or lands divided by mountains or chasms.

Hence why I said the geographics will depend on decisions made at a later date.

Or oceans.
...Right?

Actually, couldn't the oceans be home to aquatic anthros? I mean, it's not like being anthro gives them the ability to live on land...

Another possibility would be to have multiple worlds, linked in some restrictive manner such as gates. Differing levels of magic on each world would in turn influence the direction technology takes, specifically how much of it is integrated into the tech.
Alternatively, a single, large world with an uneven distribution of ether/aether (common magical energy in Steampunk settings) that results in considerably different paths of development in different regions. The people more dependent on magic would likely be able to find a way to store it in a portable form, but the effects of "dead zones" on magic could make for interesting plot points.
Though, a post-apocalyptic setting is also a very easy way to achieve schizo-tech, with most communication infrastructure destroyed and considerable scientific knowledge lost, powerful LosTech would be a valuable prize and the most "advanced" survivors may even be running off of scavenged tech that they don't truly understand themselves.

If anything, you just gave me some ideas o.o" That, or it was completely obvious and I just got up from 1000 years of living under a rock.

That is true, Zavier. I won't discriminate against those.

I would like to thank DV for this input, as it is a great inspiration for an idea I had going, but didn't know how to get working.

Ok, so here's a base for a lore idea...
In the year 2158, the world was locked heavily in World War III. Devastating weapons tore apart men, armies, cities, and even countries as they reshaped the planet. It was during this, that several of the warring factions stood together to develop a new type of weapon, one that would cause fear and separation. This was know as Project Genesis.
Project Genesis dove into a field of science never before seen in war, genetic engineering. It was a compound that, when released, caused human DNA to become weak, and copy the genetic material of any animal. To put it simply, it turned men into beasts.
Soon, Project Genesis had turned into a full-scale war machine, and just like the power of the atomic bomb, everyone had to have it. The bombs were dropped without care.
Soon, most of the world had become a blast zone, and the number of people who were infected by Project Genesis skyrocketed. Xenophobia had never been greater as militant leaders chose to take the offensive and purge what they thought as "evil" and "tainted". Their victims could only watch and tremble, as their bodies could do nothing to stop the slaughter.
Fortunately for those to be killed, not everyone thought the same way, and they rushed to find even the slightest cure as they watched their friends lose their minds and bodies to the local wilderness.
Eventually, by referring to Project Genesis as a guide, scientists created a formula that would mutate the original compound of Project Genesis, converting the human DNA into a compatible form with the animal DNA. However, this was not a perfect solution...
Project Genesis proved irreversible, and those infected kept some animal traits. From fur, to ears, to muzzles, to tails, to the legs, the variation was wide, and that was only the majority. A minority of those changed mutated in different ways, from growing a human-like torso to only regaining their human minds and memories. A new race had been created, the "Creatura Populi".
All was good, until war fell once again. Humanity fought over whether to destroy the Creatura Populi, or to protect the life they had created from themselves. They knew these "beasts" were human beings once, but they didn't care as to what they were in the past, only to what they are now.
In the end, humanity wiped itself off the face of the Earth, but not before drastically changing it. Most of the technology and knowledge was lost in the destruction caused by wars, leaving the Creatura Populi to fend for themselves. It was not long, however, before they reformed one of the greatest achievements of mankind. Civilization.
They began exploring, regaining the knowledge that was once lost to them. They revived old technology to help survive, and explored the scarred Earth. They found many secrets that humanity had so easily overlooked, from basic sciences to a mystical presence that would allow them to eventually learn to cast magicks.
With each new explorer came old knowledge from the era of mankind, and soon, cities were rebuilt and technology improved. Some refused to abandon their ways for the new, and some chose different ways to advance. They broke into different factions, each with their own views and technology, and those factions still survive to this day.
Note, this is only an idea, it is not set in stone and may change.

Very good idea. I have seen taints of the same thing before, but I trust you have a new idea for it?
-
Have to say that is a well thought out background. Definitly like where the general idea is going, and creates some interesting questions and variables such as are the Creatura of the same race all "tainted" the same way or are they are different level(ie. some close to animal, some close to human, some 50/50), and did humanitys last gasp leave any lasting scars on the earth's surface(like a infertile wasteland, or a giant molten hole in the ground)

I would say that each race would have a few mutations to keep them all from being the same, and I also think that mankind most likely left a few battle scars....

Right... About time I did an update on this...
I think a sort of neutral "everyone is having to scavenge technology" is a little bland, and doesn't give much variation to the different nations (or factions, countries, etc.). So instead, I thought to myself one day in midst of a deep plotting session, "Hmmm... Why not have empires and monopolies, of which sell various technologies to the different peoples, for both a profit and obvious 'buyer-seller' treaties? That may result in some interesting things, right?"
So there is the latest update. Will keep you posted unless I forget to remember to remember to post another update on this thread.
