Art Gallery / Draw me a Battle of LITS shirt please!
« on: January 06, 2013, 06:19:49 PM »
For some time, I've wanted some furry artwork to print on a shirt, specifically a shirt to give away to people who helped fund the nestorgames edition of my board game Battle of LITS. I'll give two shirts away and get one for myself. Because I have a low budget, I can't exactly afford to commission Virmir right now (although things could change in the future). Unfortunately, neither of the other artists I've asked who are both cheap and good have had time to come through. So instead, I'm going to ask people on the forums, if they have enough kindness in their heart to draw free stuff, to do it for me! You'll get nothing out of it except the opportunity to hone your art skills, but isn't that enough for some budding artists?

I want the shirt to feature my Jack Russell Terrier character Brian Dewitt (https://www.dropbox.com/s/clrcal5zc4713t8/Brian.png) and my fox/badger character Grant Badger Fox (http://art.by.virmir.com/art/klonk) standing on opposite sides of the Battle of LITS pieces (stacked like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sedxmem21t0rjaj/path4763-6.png). There's no need for a background; the characters can just be in a white void for all I care, and in fact, I think it would look better on a shirt that way. Other than that, I suppose you can be creative (or sketch stuff and ask me about it). ]:)

In the interest of full disclosure, note that there are a couple of artists whose styles I like (Norzman and Rawr) and who have expressed interest in doing this for cheaper than the $40 I'd have to pay Virmir. Neither of them has actually had time to draw something yet, but if either of them does, I might be more inclined to use their artwork for the shirt I get myself, because they're friendly, and stuff. However, if I have multiple shirt submissions in this thread, perhaps it is only fair that I let the winners of said shirts pick what they want to wear. Therefore, even if Norzman or Rawr comes through, if you feel inclined to create your own interpretation, don't be too discouraged; you will, after all, be able to develop your skill, if nothing else comes of it, and you might still be donating artwork to someone else's shirt! ]:)

Art Gallery / An experiment: color this grid and make a picture!
« on: December 14, 2012, 10:26:58 PM »
Your goal is to create the best possible picture by coloring each region either white or black. You may rotate the grid 90 or 180 degrees if you wish. Let's see creativity shine! Or something!

Random Topics / Mini-crosswords! (And other word puzzles)
« on: August 29, 2012, 04:27:58 PM »
Inspired by books like Sit & Solve Quick & Easy Crosswords by Francis Heaney, I made these two 10x10 crossword puzzles.

If I make any more, I'll be sure to share them here. My logic puzzle blog is devoted exclusively to language-independent logic puzzles, so there's no place for crosswords on there. :P

Game Room / UNITY (a three-player board game invented in Spain)
« on: August 12, 2012, 03:15:03 PM »
The rules, complete with example images, can be seen here: CLICK.

In summary, your goal is to unite your pieces into a single group (including a "group" of one piece). Each turn, you may take one of three actions:
* Move a piece any number of spaces in any direction (you can move other other pieces of any color, but not over walls)
* Detonate a piece (a circle removes itself and all of its neighbors, and an asterisk removes itself and all pieces in any direction you choose; a wall blocks either kind of detonation)
* Add two walls anywhere to the board

The first player to have all of his pieces in a single group wins.

The colors will move in the following order: purple, orange, green. After three players have joined, I will randomly determine which of my opponents chooses a color first, and which one chooses a color second. Then we'll take turns doing stuff until the game is over. ]:)

Game Room / Connect 4x4™ by forum
« on: July 20, 2012, 04:21:14 PM »
Connect 4x4™ is a four-player adaptation of Connect Four®. I've played it once in real life, and it was very fun. I want to try it here for no reason.

Connect 4x4™ is played on a vertical double-layered grid with 6 rows and 7 columns. Each player gets an unlimited supply of ring-shaped "checkers" and 2 double-sided "blocker" checkers of a single color. The players take turns dropping a checker into any column of the grid, where it falls and lands on the bottommost unoccupied spot. A regular checker occupies only one layer of the grid (front or back), while a blocker checker consists of two back-to-back checkers that occupy both the front and the back layer of the grid. (Consequently, if the front layer and back layer of a column are of different heights and a blocker checker is placed there, some empty space will exist between the blocker checker and the top of the shorter column.) Gameplay continues in this manner until one player gets four checkers in a line of horizontally, vertically, or diagonally adjacent spaces, regardless of which layers the checkers occupy (that is, you can weave back and forth between layers). The player who accomplishes this wins the game. In the image above, shamelessly stolen from BoardGameGeek, the blue player has a winning diagonal line from the bottom-right corner.

For playing by forum, this ASCII grid will be used (although I might occasionally update the thread with a prettier image):

Move notation: to place a regular checker, specify the column number and B for the back later or F for the front layer. For a blocker checker, specify the column followed by BF. Simple, I hope.

Game Room / Crimson Flag re-theme of To Court the King?
« on: July 15, 2012, 04:51:45 PM »
To Court the King is one of the best dice games ever. Let's imagine what a re-theme with us might be like.

(Note: the rules of the game are here!)

Tier 0:
Fool/Charlatan In the physical game, these are two sides of the same card. I like to imagine that they're the same person, and the Charlatan's merely doffing his Fool disguise. Thus, the fuzzy on this card should be someone who's always playing tricks, yet more dangerous than at first glance.

Tier 1:
Farmer: ???
Serving Maid: ???
Philosopher: Someone intellectual. . . me, perhaps? :3
Laborer: ???
Guard: ???

Tier 2:
Hunter: Does Hunter want to be a Hunter?
Merchant: ???
Astronomer: ???

Tier 3:
Noblewoman: (Note this card's relationship with the Nobleman.)
Pawn Broker: ???
Knight: ???
Magician: Evilhumour or Kenku. (Note this card's relationship with the Alchemist.)

Tier 4:
Alchemist: Kenku or Evilhumour. (Note this card's relationship with the Magician.)
Bishop: ???
Nobleman: (Note this card's relationship with the Noblewoman.)
General: That armor and that bladed weapon just screams "I'm really serious and powerful and stuff." Pontos has armor and a bladed weapon which scream the same thing.

Tier 5:
Queen: Lucile, obviously!
King: Virmir, obviously!

Game Room / Battle of LITS
« on: March 06, 2012, 11:38:53 PM »
Battle of LITS: the board game that everyone is talking about!

In all seriousness, ever since I commissioned Virmir to draw me a new avatar, there's been a mild amount of buzz from people who want to know what it is:

The colorful objects in Grant Badger Fox's hands are pieces from my board game Battle of LITS, which has been in development for some time now. Based on the Japanese logic puzzle LITS, in Battle of LITS, your goal is to use a shared supply of pieces to cover up spaces containing your opponent's symbol (X or O) while protecting your symbol from the same. Three simple rules govern the placement of pieces, and create a game which I am proud to attach my name to. As of today, a Print and Play version of Battle of LITS, including three pages of illustrated rules and all necessary components, is available for download from BoardGameGeek. Check it out!

If you like the game and have a BoardGameGeek account, I encourage you to sign into BGG and visit the following links to show your support:
* Thumb this up if you want to see this game published by nestorgames, a small publisher based in Spain.
* Thumb this up if you want to see this game made available on the board game server igGameCenter.
* Even if you hate the game, please don't be afraid to visit the Battle of LITS page on BGG and rate this game.

If Battle of LITS becomes available on igGameCenter, I will consider hosting a Battle of LITS tournament in the vein of my earlier Coffee tournament. ]:)

Writer's Guild / Absurd Short Story Writing Month (AbSSWriMo)
« on: December 01, 2011, 06:39:55 PM »
For the month of December, I challenge everyone who's interested to write a short story. The title of the story must have exactly three words: two three-letter words, and a six-letter word which is an anagram of those words. The three words may be in any order. There are no restraints on the length of the story. Also, feel free to write more than one if you're feeling ambitious!

Here's an example to get you inspired:

Red Hat Dearth

"Well, you've got the black mustache," I said, carefully looking over Paul's Halloween costume in progress. "You've got the gloves, and of course you've got the blue overalls and red shirt. I'd say your Mario costume is missing only one thing."

"A red hat with an M on it!" Paul said.

"Of course! Once we have that, the costume will be complete! And I think I know where we can find one."

Following my instincts, I rode in Paul's car to the local haberdashery, Edgar's Headgear; unfortunately, when we arrived, it turned out the store had hundreds of hats in every color except for red. "How can you not have red hats?" I asked Edgar, the elderly owner of the store. "We need one for our Mario costume!" I pointed at Paul.

"And so does everyone else in town!" Edgar replied. "I don't know who this Mario is that you young whippersnappers all worship, but all of my red hats have been bought by other customers who want to be him for Halloween. Now buy something!"

"Maybe we don't absolutely need a red hat," I said, noticing a stovepipe hat. "Maybe you can be a cross between Mario and Abe Lincoln, Paul."

"No way!" Paul said. "It has to be a red hat. Otherwise, nobody will take my costume seriously."

I looked around the store. "How about a beret, Paul? You can be Mario's French counterpart."

"Are you kidding?" Paul answered. "Mario's French counterpart would give up instead of rescuing the Princess from Bowser!"

I kept looking around the store. "Hmm, here's a cowboy hat. Remember Western Land from Mario Party 2?"

"Yeah, and don't remind me!" Paul replied. "I have. . . depressing memories. . . regarding my brother Fred and Mario Party 2."

I had no idea what Paul was talking about, and decided not to inquire any further. "Surely we can find something for you. This store has chef's hats, diving helmets, aviator hats, derbies. . ."

"And none of them work for a Mario costume!" Paul shouted with exasperation, followed by a sigh. "Well, I guess I'll just have to dress up as Mario without a hat. But if Super Mario 64 has taught me anything, I'll probably take damage a lot more easily."

Game Room / Coffee: YOU ARE CHALLENGED
« on: October 13, 2011, 02:16:37 AM »
Coffee is a two-player board game published by nestorgames and available for play on igGameCenter. The rules are simple (the objective is to get a number of your pieces in a row), but having your legal moves dictated by the orientation of your opponent's last piece makes the game very challenging. As such, I would like to see who is the best Coffee player on Crimson Flag.

To participate in the tournament, you will need to create an account on igGameCenter, and post your igGameCenter screen name in this thread (I'm mathgrant). (Edit: The tournament is only open to people who joined Crimson Flag before I made this post. ]:P) I will decide on the tournament format when I know how many players are playing, but be forewarned that you will need to coordinate with your opponents to make sure you are on igGameCenter at the same time. (Use Crimson Flag's chat room or private messages for this.) I also can't guarantee that there will be prizes, unless Virmir is willing to do some drawing for free, as I have no prize budget right now. But at least we'll know who the best Coffee player in the community is! ]:P
