Title: Through the Veil of Madness: Dungeons and Dragons Game
Post by: Jonas on March 24, 2011, 08:02:39 PM
The village of Esk is situated along the Sun Road. This small to mid-sized hamlet has been mostly unchanged since the fall of Nerath. It subsits primarily through farming and making trade with those who choose to take the longer Sun Road over the shorter—but more bandit-riddled—Moon Road. One of the more curious traditions in Esk is that every villager has at one point in their life taken up adventuring as pseudo rite of passage. These stints last anywhere from a week to a month before the villager returns, regales friends and family with stories, and then settles down. A side-effect of this tradition is that Esk’s inhabitants have a cordial respect for any adventurers who happen to pass through. While this does not translate into villagers going out of their way to offer help, it does mean that they offer a healthy respect to any adventurers who happen to pass through. This is where your story begins.

Benden Hathrow, a local farmer, has been suffering these past months. His chickens keep dying. On random days—but no more than once each week—he would find portions of his flock dead on the barn floor. There is no apparent physical cause and arcane interference has been both theorized and disproven. Fortunately, Benden has other livestock and crops to sell so the loss of chickens is not putting his livelihood at risk. However, in the past two weeks the number of losses has almost doubled, causing concern. Hathrow has circulated a call for help among nearby villages.

Perhaps you are a resident of Esk getting ready to go out on your own coming-of-age adventure. Maybe you are in need of quick money and were in one of the outlying villages when Hathrow’s plea reached your ears. You might owe Hathrow a favour. It might even be possible that you just didn’t have anything better to do. Whatever the cause, each of you has decided to help Benden Hathrow find and stop whatever is killing his chickens.

You are outside Benden’s barn, and the farmer has just finished relaying the basics of his situation (the second paragraph). Feel free to ask for details or look around. This will let you all get a feel for each other.

One last thing. For this encounter only, I am requiring all of you to type your posts in third-person. This is to help you all get used to each others’ names and appearances.

Now then, what do you do?

The Monks of the Order of the Stone Fist hold that helping others is an ideal way with which to train their bodies, and therefore help to attain perfection of the mind.

As a wandering monk of said order, Aroth Blitz has wandered into Esk in search of a person in need.  It wasn't long after arriving he heard of Farmer Hathrow's requests for help.

He now stands in front of the barn. ((I asssume the Farmer is here, as well))  He stands slightly taller than the farmer, though he is built broadly, his wolflike features made all the more apparent by the contrast.

Adjusting the spear tucked between his loose shirt and backpack, he crosses his arms across his chest, and looks around, observing his allies in this venture.

Dexter looks around at the others, a patched, worn cloak concealing much of his slight frame.  Quite aware that he's the shortest in the group bar the dwarf, he stands with his back a little more rigid than he normally would.  He keeps his distance from the minotaur, though trying to avoid making it look like he does so on purpose, as he'd rather not let on that he finds it unnerving.  Though the wolf creature is unusual, at least it's not nearly so massive.

A local, good friend, and customer of Benden's, he felt that it was only right to help out a neighbor in need.  Besides which if the chickens kept disappearing like that, Benden might have to start charging more for eggs, and that would be mighty inconvenient.  The longbow strung across his back indicates his status as a volunteer in the militia, though he has never actually been called into service.

Alexander looks at the situation and ponders. A Gleaner of Esk in his off-time, such perils affecting a farm of the town troubles him. The forest green sash of his tunic blew in the wind, as he rubbed his chin. With the farmer permission, he began to look over the chicken coop to try to figure out how the chickens have died.

Alexander: Benden has kept the most recent victims and shows you the dead chickens. There is no sign of physical trauma.

"I had Jules Dire take a looker when he last passed though--the mage who lives up the road. He couldn't find any arcane meddlin' either." The farmer says with a dejected sigh. "This'd all be lot less troublin' if I actually knew what was doing the damn thing."

One odd note: despite having died almost a week ago, the chicken shows no signs of decay.

Dexter strokes his chin with one hand and looks at the chickens Benden brought out.

"That's curious alright.  They don't have the looks of something that suffered a plague either.  Might they have gotten into some poisons?  I reckon some of those wouldn't leave too much sign of what's done it."

After looking around some more he asks,

"Is there any place where they seemed to die most often?"

"Have there been any reports of ghasts or other meddiling spirits around?" Alexander asks as he looks over the chicken to see if he can determine the physical cause of death.

Zen'Ral stood, like a statue, with a small white book, an unrecognizable symbol on the front. He held his spear in his right hand, his book in his left, and a tan robe over the leather armor he wore for protection. He watched astutely as the chickens were being brought out, calmly flipping to a specific page in his book before speaking up, reciting an excerpt from the passage. "As I gazed upon the villagers, forced between the boundary of life and death, sorrow overwhelmed me. Their figures posed in every day activities, and their expressions of joy and satisfaction, they were frozen in time and could never thaw out. Even though no stench of it remained, this was clearly the work of the wicked. Of that, I have no doubt."

(( I hope this is all right with you, Jonas? ))

"Ista, I am going! Right through this door!" - a voice sounded from Benden's house, followed by a startled woman's shout. A tall (tho not nearly as tall as some of the other adventurers) fox-like being ran outside holding his belongings, chased by "How do you DARE to push me aside?!" and an empty pot.

Rynvoor dodgded skillfully and approached the group in slight haste.

"I'm going with them, Benden", he said to the farmer. "I'm all right now, and I owe you more than this after how you and your" - he made a quick look towards the house - "amazingly considerate wife helped me..."

He grinned showing quite a lot of teeth, and added "Besides, I couldn't stand you running out of poultry."

Then, realizing he's just in pants and own fur, he snickered and started putting on his scale armor. It seems like it was recently repaired, some parts of it looking much newer than others.

(( Btw, is it assumed that everyone else in the adventurer's pack already knows each other? ))

((everyone should be aware of each other's names and the basic reasons they have for helping Benden.))

Benden scratches his head. "Haven't had any ghasts or such 'round this area in years. Big church march cleaned out the surrounding hills and everything. You all are welcome ta take a look in the barn if you think there's a creature responsibel though. I've given it what looks I can but maybe there'll be something I missed?"

He pauses as Rynvoor shoots out of the house. "Oh, glad you could join us. If you'd like to start earning your tail around here then now's as good a time as any."

Aroth takes the rising commotion without comment.  He nods briefly at Alexander's assessment, affirming his agreement with it.

((No, Aroth's not a silent monk, but he is a somewhat quiet one.  I've had fun playing silent monks before, but I want to try one that is just reserved, rather than sworn to silence.))

Dexter nods as well and looks toward Rynvoor.

"Good to have you with us, Ryn.  Looks like we're going nowhere for now though, we're going to be on watch tonight.  We'll arrange shifts, but one thing, Ben; it's important that you do everything just as you've been doing, so it's easier to see where things go wrong and if someone or something is involved, we don't tip them off."

(By the way guys if this is allowed I am a Gray fox, I believe Jonas told me it was alright).  [:)

A stout, short, tough male Fox clad in chainmail armor stands before the farmer. "I come from a military school who believes assisting those in need and helping your fellow man comes first! I will gladly lend you my aid Benson!" As he salutes to him. "We will do whatever we can to help!" as he finishes with a warm grin.

The latecomer grinned to the cloaked ranger, "Well, I'm happy to be here too... especially after Ista decided this morning that I should stay in the guest bed after that wyvern accident for another few days."

As the shorter vulpine snapped out his words, Ryn's ears perked... he then looked in the voice's direction and tilted his head.
"Really weird guy for a Gray... to undertake war studies like this...", he thought, then sighed. "Ehh... probably just what he thinks seeing someone like me not in a magician's robes... and he's definitely having the right attitude for the military... up to and including mixing up names."

Benden appears somewhat bewildered by the actions of his ecclectic group of helpers. He scratches his head nervously. "Well, I've told you all I know. Feel free to look around or follow me or whatnot. I'm going to get started on work today; no offense fellas but I can't afford to fall behind."

He gives you all a once-over and nods appreciatively before leaving for the corn fields. You can see his hat bobbing between the sheafs. Left alone with a mysteriously dead chicken and a barn, what do you do now?

((Looking over my character sheet, I am somewhat surprisingly short on non-physical skills.  I guess Aroth is gonna' have to leave most of the investigation to those of you better suited to it...))

Alexander coughs. "While I understand you guys are happy to be investigating something so sinister, I think we need to focus on the task at hand. At this current point, our best option would be to return a night fall to try to stake out the coop for the night, since that has been when the issues have occured. Till then I would say do what you can to try to find out what happened, head back for any supplies you think you might need, and meet pack as the sun begins to fall through the landscape."
Title: Re: Through the Veil of Madness: Dungeons and Dragons Game
Post by: Digital Vulpine on March 29, 2011, 09:26:33 PM
After Benden leaves, Dexter picks up the dead chicken and smells it.

"Huh, I thought something looked off about it.  It hardly stinks at all, like something's kept it from rotting. Might there be some other source of magic at work?  At any rate, I think I'll take a look at what's here, so it will be easier to tell if anything is out of place tomorrow."

Dexter proceeds to take an inventory of the barn, noting where stuff is and how many chickens there are.  Being careful not to disturb anything, he also keeps his eyes open for things that seem off, like they don't belong in a barn.

To Benden's amusement, you have split into shifts that alternate between following him through his routine, keeping an eye on the chickens, and slipping into town for supplies. The barn proves uneventful, the trips to town depend on your personal needs, and you consider the time with Benden to be extremely interesting, incredibly boring, or utterly irrelevant as you constantly keep an eye out for something trying to eat him. In any case, night has now fallen and the Hathrows have retired to bed. All of you are now staking out the barn. This old but well-maintained structure is very spacious--an echo of its previous use before becoming an overly-large chicken coop. The hens line the walls in individual mounds of hay, fast asleep and thankfully silent. What do you do?

Dexter attempts to climb up onto one of the rafters with a view of the door and as many of the chickens as possible.  If successful he hides himself in the shadows, keeping his eyes and ears alert for anything out of the ordinary.  He figures the best he can do for now is watch, he'll leave meddling in any sorts of magics to those who might know more about that.

If he finds the climb too difficult, he will look for somewhere to hide on the ground level instead.

Post by: Dragyn on March 30, 2011, 08:23:09 PM
Aroth also chooses to take to the rafters.  ((If we're allowed to take 10 on it, he won't have any problems at all.))

Positioning himself such that he can see most of the interior of the barn, he settles down to observe.

Summoning his spirit as the group regathers, Alex eyes the chickens from the door, his Wolven spirit eyeing about all the while. He keeps an eye out for any sort of sudden movements along the field, or any sort of strange disturbances.

Within seconds of Dexter and Aroth climbing into the rafters, Alexander’s spirit companion begins to churn in agitation. The warning comes too late, however. A flicker of shadow is all the warning Aroth gets before something strikes at him from the rafters; a thin tentacle, slick with plasma slams into the dried wood above the monk’s head, making no sound except for the fracturing of wood. Dexter spots the silent movements of another creature and shouts a warning. The air quivers as more of these silent, undulating horrors emerge. It takes little effort to guess that these are what have been killing the chickens.

Nature Knowledge: These are Fel Taints, sentient manifestations of the Far Realm’s influence. Though weak compared to entities such as Aboleths or Beholders, Fel Taints are still dangerous. The easiest way to identify a Fel Taint is through its signature trait: as creatures only half-existing in this dimension, Fel Taints make absolutely no sound regardless of what actions they take.

(You taking suggestions on tokens for the party Jonas?)

Startled slighty, Alexander attempts to step back from the rather vicious looking Abberation in front of him. He tries to remeber what he was taught about them, and what their strengths and weaknesses may be(Knowledge). As he does he sees the Darter attack Aroth and with a flick of the hand, sends the spirit in quick fashion over to him, and with a snarl it leaps on near by Fel Taint with its teeth!

(Ok, so free action Nature Monster Knowledge Check, then as a move, shift S out of the Darter's grasp, with the spirit moving E-NW into the adjacent space to Zen and Aroth.

Then Protecting Strike. Prioity is E Minion, Darter. If attack successful, Adjacent allies get +3 Temp HP(Which right now is Aroth and Zen). Anyone adjacent of the Spirit Wolf will also get +1 to all Non-AC defences.)

Finding himself caught between two of the monstrosities, Dexter quickly lashes out at the one who seems weaker with his longsword and fades along the rafters to find a safer position in the southwest.  He does a quick study of the abomination next to him to evaluate his course of action.  Still too close for comfort, he shifts southwest to put some distance between him and the tentacles.

(Fading Strike against the minion, then shift W and SW as part of the attack.  Mark the Darter adjacent to me as my quarry, then use a move action to shift SW again, so I'm not surrounded any more.

If for some reason the minion is dead or out of reach, mark the Darter as my quarry first, then, if it is the only enemy adjacent to me, use twin strike with the long sword and short sword.

If there is another enemy adjacent to me, shift west, then use fading strike with the longsword to move SW twice.

If said enemy is blocking that movement, use fading strike to shift two squares north instead and the move action to shift north again.  That would pretty much be a last-ditch thing if there isn't a way to get back with the party.

I sure ended up in a complicated situation.  If something happens that makes none of the above viable, I want that Darter as my quarry, I want a dead minion if possible, and I want to be at least one square away from any enemies.  If they move so that reaching safety without triggering a bunch of opportunity attacks is impossible, then stay put and use twin strike on the Darter in an attempt to bust my way through.)

If no beasts threaten him in the rafters, Aroth jumps down, delivering a flying kick to one of the darters, and (if that hits) using his Flurry of Blows to dispatch a minion.  (Landing in a space where he threatens at least 2 Fel Taints)

If the one next to him isn't dead, then he'll make a melee basic attack against it.  If there's more in his reach, he'll place his flurry on a different target.

((Flurry of Blows always does 7 Damage, and always hits if the triggering attack hit))
((Either of the other attacks I'm using in this case use the same damage, so I'm only rolling that once))

(I got it. IC wise, Alexander would probably be barking an order or something.)

Zen steps back before chanting the summoning spell, as his spirit companion appears beside Dexter. In a loud growl it strikes the Fel Taint with its claws, before snarling at the others as it looks to them.

(If the Minion NE of Dexter is not dead, summon spirit north of Dexter, Protecting Strike agianst the minion, move W, SW asZen shifts S.

If the Minion is dead, Summon Spirit north of Darter, attack Darter with Protecting Strike. Spirit Shifts SW, as Zen shifts S.

In Either case if successful, Dexter gains 4 Temp HP.)

"Oh, frazzz!", the young fox cried and rushed forward.
((If the darter SW of Dexter is still there))
Once the monster was in range, he catched the ranger's sight, noded to him, and  swung his weapon nervously.
(NE, to the place previously occupied by Alexander. Plain old attack, flank.)
((Otherwise...))
He closed on the minion, making a turning attack and balancing with his tail in hope to reach the one behind too.
(N,NW, use Passing Attack. If succesful, shift NW, attack the darter.)
((If impossible, he'll try to assist whoever's in need and reach, using the regular attack.))

The middle darter contorts and seems to ‘tighten’ itself before rushing at Altanis. It strikes dead-on, leaving no physical signs but sending the fox reeling in psychic pain. As Altanis falls down, the whirling tendrils silently move on, but not before Alexander’s spirit wolf is able to take advantage of the opening and strike. The Fel Taint swirls in the air as part of its mass is broken off and vanishes, though not nearly as much as you would like. There is some degree of compensation in Altanis being able to mend some of his wounds.

The smaller drones swirl around the closest targets, lashing out with their tentacles. Aroth lets out a cry of pain as he is struck three times by the silent assailants, with the drones silent even as blood begins to stain Aroth’s fur from the psychic barrage. The remaining two line up with the darters to flank Dexter and Altanis. The shaman ducks from a swinging tentacle, but the prone warlord is less fortunate.

Zen’Ral’s spirit emerges in a burst of energy that detonates the nearest drone; a silent explosion as it is expulsed from reality.

The spectral wolf lunges through the air and expels another blight on reality. The victory forms a spiritual shield around Aroth, giving the wounded monk a much-needed boon.

Rynvoor’s attack banishes another drone, and strikes the centre of the darting mass flanking Dexter. It mutely writhes as a pale, clear ichor begins to coat its tendrils. You sincerely hope this is a good sign.

Dexter is unable to react in time as the darter to his north whirls and lashes. While the spiritual shield absorbs some of the hit, he still takes a psychic blow.

Dexter shakes the hit off and looks at his situation.  The abomination between him and Ryn seems to be in bad shape, he may have the opportunity to take it out, but if Ryn can handle it himself he might want to be more concerned with the one that moved behind him to replace the one he had banished just moments before. Either way though, he certainly does not want to remain between two masses of tentacles.

Dexter picks his target carefully, sets up his attack, and strikes as best he can, balancing the need to end this quickly with his desire to be in a safer position.

(If Rynvoor does more than 6 damage on his next turn but does not finish the darter off, mark Darter 1 as my quarry if it isn't already, use Fading Strike on it, and shift NW, W.

If Rynvoor does less than 6 damage or misses, use Evasive Strike instead of Fading Strike and shift W, SW, SW.

If Darter 1 is already dead, shift NW, mark the darter currently NE of me (due E after the shift if it doesn't move) as my quarry, and use Twin Strike with the Longbow, both shots targeting that Darter.  If I am not the closest player to it, though I should be with only 1 empty space between us, remove Prime Shot's +1 bonus from the to-hit roll.

In general, if you're not sure that what I'm attacking is my quarry, use a minor action to mark it as such before the attack.

Also, heh, exactly 10 rolls. )

Seeing Aroth in trouble, Alexander begins to chant in a soothing voice. The months wounds heal as healing energies flow through Alex's Spirit. The excess energies from it also begin healing Altanis's wounds. Completing the chant, he points his rod at the darter behind Dexter, and with words of wrath, casts a cloud of ice and snow at the beast.

(Healing Spirit for Surge+3, and Altanis for 1d6+3, then Wrath of Winter on the Darter NW of Dexter. If successful, teleport N of Dexter to give him the adjacent defence bonus. If unsuccessful, move E-E-E-E-E. Alexander will shift W in either case to keep out of the Darter's grasp.)

((Wait, I missed with a 26 vs. AC at level 1?  How's that work?  Also, Passing Attack is the name of Tvorsk's ability, not mine.))

Assuming at least one of them lives that long, Aroth kicks at one of the creatures threatening him (Crane's Wings Atk), assigning his flurry of blows to a different target.

((To clarify a statement from my last attack post, flurry of blows does 7 damage if I put it on the same target, and 9 if it's on a different target, which is why I usually say to put it elsewhere.  Since I'm pretty sure these are minions, it should just kill them outright, if I manage to hit with the triggering attack))

If there aren't any threatening him on his turn, Aroth will make the same attack after jumping back into the fray.  (Essentially, the same as last time, only my fallback and my expected action are the same.)

(I'm only rolling the attack once, since all that should change is the target.)

Zen'Ral grimaces at his comrades being injured. The shaman mumbles inaudibly, commanding his spirit messenger to assault the nearest wounded foe, whilst protects his allies as well. "Evil spirits, begone from this realm at once, and do not lay a hand... tentacle... tendril... do not assault my comrades!"

((Zen'Ral's spirit moves one square south and attacks Darter 1 with Defending Strike. If Darter 1 is already dead, then the same action is preformed on Darter 2. As a result of either, Rynvoor gets +1 AC for the turn.)

Altanis’s efforts to mend his ally have cost him his guard. The darter strikes him and sends a reeling force of psychic pain into the fox’s mind.

The drones assaulting Aroth renew their attacks. Silent tentacles lash at his head, but the monk’s keen reflexes allow him to evade.

Alexander’s spirit offers Altanis a much-needed boon, and the frigid burst the shaman unleashes compels yet another taint to be expelled from reality.

Shifting around the darter behind him, Dexter delivers two quick strikes with his blades. The first strikes true, but the second falls just short of the writing tentacles.

Invigored and empowered by his allies healing abilities, Aroth assumes a crane’s stance and launches a rending kick at the fel taints around him. His feetclaws find little resistance as they tear into the tentacle masses, each imploding under the strikes. Building on the attack’s momentum, Aroth leaps backwards and lands safely on the ground, better able to fight against the rest.

Dexter’s quarry hovers in place, slowly undulating in unmistakable caution. It then begins to move backwards. Dexter’s blade lunges out but fails to connect, and the darter phases through the barn wall
and flees.

With only a single foe left, Altanis takes the final initiative. He rushes forwards and lets out a commander’s order, spurring Rynvoor to slam his hammer into the fel taint. It discorporates instantly, leaving nothing behind but a small, sickly-shifting orb.

((Dexter: You were on a raised platform and could not shift northwest. I moved you north instead and changed twin strikes to your melee weapons.

Altanis: There was only one enemy left and you were next on initiative, so I automated your actions.

All: Congratulations on completing your first combat encounter. You each receive 100 experience. Currently, everyone is on the ground floor of the barn except for Dexter, who is still in the rafters.))

(Wait, Altanis is "At" on the map and Alexander is "Al", right?  He doesn't seem to be anywhere near any enemies, how would he trigger an opportunity attack?)

Dexter drops down from the rafters and shakes himself off and looks at the others.

"Those... things were most unexpected.  I was worried they would overrun us at first, it is fortunate that they turned out to be so fragile."

Noticing the orb, Dexter points it out but keeps his distance from it.

"What is that, though?  It is intriguing, but I am loathe to touch anything left by those abominations without first knowing what it is."

"I don't know, but I think I'm gonna puke... possibly at it..."
Ryn steps away, his legs shaking, and nervously wipes his weapon clean. Then he looks around and sighs deeply.
"Sorry, it's just... some of you got hurt so much...", he starts, then sighs again and just stands there.

"Nothing some simple magic and rest can fix Ryn." Alexander says as he steps over to the orb, and starts to look over it, trying to discern its Magical or Natural properties.

The orb is the size of a child's fist and its surface, while constantly moving, resembles the 'skin' of the fel taints. Your spirit companion does not seem to find it threatening, though it most definitely wants to get rid of the thing. The orb is safe to pick up and does not appear to have any overtly magical properties, though you notice that it is impossible to look directly the orb; your eyes always seem to rest on the air directly above, below, or to the side instead.

Dexter shakes his head and says, "I think I'll leave the hocus pocus to you guys.  I'll go tell Benden that we found what was killing his chickens, he'll probably want to see that thing."

After searching for Benden, Dexter tells him,
"We found what's been killing your chickens, Benden.  We got most of them but one ran away.  Let me tell you, if those things come back you've got one heck of a problem.  Huge tentacle things, ugly as sin.  The mages might be able to tell more about them, but my money's on demons. These ones didn't seem to take too well to being hit though, a good thwack or two was usually enough to send them back to wherever they came from.  Let me tell you, it was freaky.  When those things hit it hurts like all heck, but they didn't leave a scratch."

"Unless one of you guys can discern this better, I think it may be best to take it to the closist mage's guild to dispose of it. Wouldn't want to try to destory it and have something bad happen." Alexander says as he picks up the orb.

((For the record, it is now morning, since Benden was very much fast asleep during the fight))

Benden scratches his head. "A wizard? Well, there's always Johan Wright. He's the guy I brought in when the attacks first started. I know he wasn't much help back then, but maybe if he knew what the cause was he could be of more help to you guys? Johan lives in Werites Arch, about a day's walk south on the Sun Road. Best of luck to you, and thanks again for saving my chickens."

You have a name and a location now. While you are interested in finding out more about the strange creatures, and very eager to get rid of the nauseating orb, you are also not under any sort of rush. With Benden's reward of 100g each, you may be able to resupply in town before heading out.

The desired materials are found in town and you have successfully restocked. The route to Weritise Arch is direct--just south along the Sun Road. The sky is fortunately clear and there is little traffic to encounter on your way. You have a day's worth of travel ahead and no one but each other for company. As you make your way along the path, what do you do?

As Alexander considers the sickly object, his spirit companion begin to churn and manifest. Through your innate connections, you can sense its wariness of the orb as its spectral form flickers and slowly extends around it before breaking off, leaving a translucent aura behind. This will shield you for the orb's influence for a time, but at the cost of your companion's defenses.

((This will protect you all from the hallucinations until an extended rest. However, your spirit companion will become vulnerable to area attacks while the effect lasts. Since he currently has the orb, Alexander's companion will be the one performing this action until the next extended rest))

Fortune is with you as nothing else interrupts your travels. After a few hours, the guard wall of Weritise Arch comes into view. Behind this edifice lies the primary trade city along the Sun Road, and the home of Johan the mage. Though still wary from the incident of the past, you cannot help but feel relieved that soon you can be rid of it. As you near the entrance, you find the gate closed and flanked by guards.

The guard on the left shakes his head. "I'm sorry, sirs. But Weritise Arch is sealed for the time being. Recent increases in crime have warranted strict traffic regulation until the situation is resolved."

Passive Insight: The guard's delivery is flat and mechanical; he speaks an official line and is making little effort to hide it. There is something else warranting the gate closure.

The guard on the right looks at you. "Johan... Johan... the name's familliar. I think he was one of the people who got--"

A stern look from the guard on the left silences him.

"Right. Sorry, sir, but I can't divulge any information that might pertain to the well-being of the city. You and your friends may want to turn back. I'm sorry you've come all this way for nothing but the fact is that the city's sealed. Guards are posted at the north, south, and west gates so you simply aren't going to get in."

Unprintable.  Just unprintable. This looks very, very bad.  Could it have something to do with the orb?  Perhaps a fiend followed our poor friend when he visited here last?

Nodding again, frowning just as much as ever, Dexter replies,

"Ah, I understand.  You're just following orders, after all.  This is unfortunate, most unfortunate.  Thank you for your time."

Returning to the group, Dexter whispers,

"So, what do you all make of it?  Do we break in to find a mage who may be in no condition to help us, or risk travel to the next town over?"

Ryn's ears perk up with enthusiasm, and he runs closer, tailwagging.

Ryn looks and ears around.

"Well, I actually don't know anyone else we might go to, but couldn't let the guards listen... because see, I think I know how we may...", he grinned, "visit this one Wright.
You probably noticed that this knecht said they're posted at north, south, and west gates?
That means they didn't bother to put anyone at the eastern one, which is locked shut since that failed gnoll attack a few years ago. The dogs destroyed the guardhouse, putting the winches under tons of dirt.
Anyway... we might try getting to these, or just scale the wall. It leads to shadier part of the city, so I'm pretty sure we'll need to worry more about keeping our purses than about someone raising an alarm."

The fox tilts his head. "Think it could work?"

The east gate looks normal, apart from a distinct lack of repair. The iron porticulis has rust in a few places, and the stonework is chipped and scratched. You can make out the rubble of what once was the guardhouse on the other side, along with several run-down buildings. What do you do?
Title: Re: Through the Veil of Madness: Dungeons and Dragons Game

Dexter motions for the others to stay hidden and carefully approaches the wall, checking to see if anyone is watching the gate and if there are any holes large enough to fit through, as this would save the trouble of climbing.
Title: Re: Through the Veil of Madness: Dungeons and Dragons Game

Although cracked in many places, this damage is only superficial. You can see small openings that would make excellent handholds, but none that would allow passage through.

The climb is long, but not overly difficult. As one of you reaches the top you are able to aid the others in climbing. Climbing down into the city is even easier, as the rubble of the ruined guard tower offers a pseudo-staircase, albeit one that would probably be more difficult to scale than to descend. The east ward of the city is as run down as any crime-riddled district could be expected. The streets are deserted and many houses have their shutters drawn tight. You must navigate into the main portion of the city and find Johan Wright, what will you do?

Your journey out of the east ward is uneventful. Far too uneventful, considering this is the most crime-riddled portion of the city. In fact, you have not met a single person by the time you arrive at the central square. At the end of the street, you can make out some guards by the north gate, but apart from these the city appears completely deserted.

"Maybe it wasn't a good idea to scale the wall..." Alex says as he looks around, trying to discern if the town is completly devoid of life, not just humanoid.

Dexter looks around at the empty streets.  The shutters on the buildings are drawn, and dust swirls across the empty courtyard in the light wind. "Maybe they're hiding from something..."

"I have bad feelings about this...", the fox muttered...

A creaking sound makes you turn. The door of one of the nearby houses has opened and a furred hand reaches out and beckons you inside.

"Get in, quick!" a voice hisses. "You should know better!"

Dexter looks at the others, "Well, it might be a lead at least.  Let's go."

He walks toward the door, checking over his shoulders as he does so.

Aroth follows Dexter cautiously, unsure of the allegiance of the voice.

Follows the others making sure his spirit is slowly following.

The home is simple--not extravagant, but not impoverished either. the person who beckoned you in is an elder Vale. Once inside, you see that the fox has a kit as well.

'You mad?" He barks once the door closes behind you, "you want to be nabbed by those things? Or are you like the blasted tailor and think this is all a hoax? You seriously think the guard would be on lockdown for so long if these creatures were a children's prank?"

Dexter lowers his head and says somberly,

"I apologize, but what are these 'things' you refer to?  We are travelers who have only just arrived from the East, and encountered no guards when we entered the city. We are looking for a friend who lives here, or had lived here at any rate.  Fearing this city deserted, we have been looking for anything that may indicate his whereabouts."

Alex nods as Dexter speaks, keeping a quick eye about his surroundings, and his spirit, who will accept attention if touched by the kit.

The Vale rubs his eyes as his tail lashes irritably. "Travellers...oi... Looks, I'm sure your friend is fine so long as he had better sense than you lot. There've been attacks lately by some creatures no one's ever seen before. The whole town is on lockdown until the guard catches the things and until then no one is allowed out except under specific circumstances. Me and Keller--" he gestures to the kit "--are allowed outside but only under strict guard since we have to deliver supplies to the temple so they can treat those injured by the creatures. At any rate, if you can get inside the city unnoticed then I suggest you leave the same way and come back when things have calmed down."

Dexter crosses his arms and nods.
"I understand, and yet I cannot help but worry for our friend's safety, and would very much like to be able to at least return with news of his whereabouts.  Would you happen to know of Johan Wright?"

Alexander waits for Dexter to get his response before asking. "If I may good sir, have you seen what the creatures look like?"
