Title: Sketches!
Post by: Virmir on November 14, 2010, 02:06:11 PM: Random sketches! This shall be my sketch thread. I tend to sketch while waiting for something, by CF community requests (or inspired weirdness), or when I'm really burned out and tired after work. (Often a combination...) So as such, sketches are generally a whole lot more random (and often times weirder) than my finished artwork. [;)

From what I can see in that picture, the Virmir near the top has 8 legs, but it may continue on out of frame. I still think an 8-legged aur should be called an arachnitaur, because that sounds better than octotaur.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is on a normal scale for flies and spiders.

/me looks at the tiny spider and fly on a nearby spider web and watches.

Quick doodle in-between working on CF comic. I actually drew most of this at 6AM and only touched it up now. I often have trouble sleeping during the early morning hours. After getting up and doodling for 20 minutes and getting re-tired, I was able to sleep well. Perhaps I should consider more insomnia-sketches.

I replaced the fan in my Thinkpad x60 Tablet (the thing I do all my art with) yesterday.

The good news: It now has a quiet fan!

The bad news: It totally no longer responds to any pen input at all. *facepaws*

After much frustration, and many more takings-apart, I just ebayed a slightly newer and more powerful Thinkpad x61 as a replacement.

Luckily I have my old x41 as a backup to hold me over until it arrives. I can draw with it just fine, but doing the super-huge CF comic might be an... interesting experience after layer 100 or so...

Also sketching is the hardest part of drawing, so the amount I'd have to charge would be something like over half the price of a final picture, whereas you'd get something that amounts to less.

Been playing Zelda: Majora's Mask lately. [;)

Not all the way through yet, but pretty fun so far! I like Deku Link the best. I'm kinda disappointed in Zora Link, though. I mean, he's not fishy enough! I'm not terribly fond of the idea of turning into a fish person, but if I've got to turn into a fish person to save the world, I want to go all out, blast it.

Most possibly a pinched nerve in my neck is causing arm numbness, and not carpal tunnel. Which means there's no need to rest the wrist, so art activities shall resume immediately.

Arm itself is actually better the past two days, so holding off on further tests that will confirm or deny until it flares up again. It got bad enough to the point where I couldn't sit down and had set up a standing work station, but now I'm back to sitting again. Maybe it's a issue of adjusting my posture better or something (though honestly I think I'm fairly ergonomic). We'll see!

It's the elbow this time. Although it's getting better. Been sketching a CF comic, but need to take frequent breaks to avoid aggravating it. Hence, ANGRY LEFT-HANDED DOODLE. Did do some rescaling/resizing, but I do that when I draw normally anyway, so nyah!

Done entirely with my off hand.

Not too bad, but mostly because of my super-sketchy style. Had a few revelations on how to hold the pen, though long curves are still impossible. Inking would be much harder. Though I'll bet if I did this every single day for a few months I could get it almost as good as the right. Hmmmmmmmm....

Right is recovering. Had a setback last weekend, but hope to be back at it this weekend, restore CF buffer pages, then maybe take another weekend for personal projects to make sure all is well before opening commissions again.

30 minute doodle to keep the arms from shriveling up completely during forced rest, which will most assuredly last at least several more months. 15 minutes with the left hand and 15 minutes with the right--pick which drew which part! One of the things I am working on is moving away from my super scribbly sketches to slower more precise strokes (like real artists do). Should save me tons of strokes and thus place less strain on my miserable tendons.

Yes, I have been making efforts to try and draw a few longer strokes more slowly as opposed to scribbling out lines with many strokes quickly. This method is less taxing on the hands.

An odd figure from a dream the other night.

There is a video game starring a bland looking human male. He is augmented by some sort of sprite or fairy, which some reason is a sort of flying little slime-blob, and given wings, and then sent to fly around a level in a 3D platformer type deal.

At the end of the level, the fairy-blob proclaims it can transform you further, and gives the player six or so choices of forms, the most ridiculous of which I naturally picked and is pictured here.

Wings retained from earlier, spontaneous transgendering, lower half green dragon (which I didn't draw wide enough), and arms that are animate cloth snakes.

Fae are giggly magical flying pests about the length of an earthworm. All fae appear female (they are born from flowers or something). While individually relatively harmless, a hive of fae is extremely dangerous due to the additive effect of their dust spells which tend change the surrounding environment (including living creatures) to suit their tastes. While a fly swatter may be sufficient for one or two, stronger bug spray is recommended to discourage a hive from moving in. A professional exterminator is recommended for groups more than a half dozen or so. Fae tend to be vengeful, and with enough hive members their curses can last for months or years, or as long as the victim remains within the hive's domain if it is large enough.

Earliest concept art of Roko from 2021. He came a lot easier since I'm used to foxes. I had this weird idea that everyone's going to have different colored eyes, but ended up dropping it.
